Ans 1: Base Units:The units of base quantities are known as base unit.

Derived Quantity:The unit of derived quantities are known as derived units. The derived units can be derived from base unit and supplementary units
Supplementary Units:The general conference on weight and measures has not yet classified certain units of the SI under either base units or derived units such SI Units are called supplementary units This class contains only two units of purely geometrical quantities which are place angle and the said angle.
1. Radian :It is the unit of plane angle. One radian represents a plane angle subtended at the center of a circle by on are of length equal to radius of the circle.
2. Steradian:Steradian is the unit for a solid angle in a three dimensional space steradian is defined as "the solid angle subtended at the center of a sphere by an area of its surface equal to the square of the radius of that sphere"

What is meant by INTEL SAT? At what frequencies the INELSAT-VI operates ?

Ans 1: The largest satellite system managed by 126 countries is international. Telecommunication Satellite Organization (INTELSAT).
The INELSAT-VI operates at microwaves frequencies of 4, 6, 11 and 14 Ghz.

Explain free and forced oscillations.

Ans 1: Free oscillations; A body is said to be executing free vibrations when it oscillates without the interference of an external force.

Forced oscillations: If an oscillating system is subjected to an external periodic force, then forced vibrations will take place.
- The vibrations of a factory floor caused by the running of heavy machinery is an example of forced vibrations.
- The mass of a vibrating pendulum is struck repeatedly, the forced vibration are produced.

Define Simple Harmonic Oscillator and driven harmonic oscillator.

Ans 1: The oscillator motion taking place under the action of restoring force is known as simple harmonic motion.A body such as simple pendulum , executing SHM is called simple harmonic oscillator
A physical system undergoing forced vibrations is know as driven harmonic oscillator.

What is the near point? Give its numerical value?

Ans 1: The minimum distance from the eye at which an object appears to be distinct is called near point or least distance of distinct vision.
Its numerical value is 25 cm
The location of the near point, however , change with age.

Why a safety helmet of a motor cycle's is padded?

Ans 1: A motor cycle's safety helmet is padded so as to extend the time of collision to prevent serious injury.

At what point or points in its path does a projectile have its minimum speed,its maximum speed?

Ans 1: The speed of the projectile is minimum at the maximum height of projectile. It is because of the reason that; at maximum height the vertical component of velocity becomes zero.
The speed of the projectile is maximum at the point of projection and also just before it strikes the ground because the vertical component of velocity is maximum at these points.

Ans 1: Acceleration:The rate of change of velocity is known as acceleration.
Mathematically, we have
Acceleration = v/t It is a vector quantity. It SI unit m/sec²
Dimensions of acceleration:We know that
V= Displacement / time = m/sec= Length / Time
V=[L T^-1]
Dimensions of acceleration:We Known that
a = Velocity/time = m/sec . sec = m/sec^-2
a = Length/time² a = [L T^-2]
Uniform Acceleration:A body is said to be moving with the uniform acceleration if equal change occurs in velocity in equal intervals of time.
Variable Acceleration:A body is said to be moving with variable Acceleration if unequal change occurs in velocity in equal intervals intervals of time.
Linear Acceleration:The acceleration which is produced due to change in magnitude of velocity is known as linear acceleration.
Radical Acceleration:The acceleration which is produced due to change indirection of velocity is known as radical acceleration.
Positive Acceleration:The acceleration is said to be positive if the magnitude of velocity increases with respect to time.
Negative Acceleration:The acceleration will be magnitude of velocity decreases with respect to time.
InstantaneousAcceleration:The acceleration of a body at any particular instant of time is known as instantaneous acceleration.

What is isolated system ? State and explain the law conservation of linear momentum. with an example ?

Ans 1: Isolated System:A system which is not affected by external forces is known as an isolated system.
Law of conservation of linear Momentum:
Statement:This law states that, In the absence of external forces the total linear momentum of the system remains constant.
Example:Consider two bodies of masses 'm₁, and m₂which are moving in the same direction along the same line, as shown in the figure

What dose the word "micro" signify in the words "micro wave oven ?

Ans 1: Micro means very small. Micro waves have the shortest wavelength of all the shortest wavelengths of all the radio waves, therefore, these are known as microwaves. Now like all electromagnetic waves the microwaves produces heating effect when their energy is absorbed. It is because, due to shorter wave length the micro waves posses high frequency and maximum energy.

Define power and instantaneous power?

Ans 1: Power:The power of doing work is known as power. It is represented by 'P' and is given by
Power = work/time
P = w/t
Instantaneous Power:The rate of doing work in the limit when 't' approaches to zero is known as instantaneous power.

Question # 12

A person holds a bag of groceries while standing still. A car is stationary with its engine running.How are the two situations similar from the point of view of work ?

Ans 1: In both the above two cases, since there is no displacement, therefore the work done will be zero. Hence in this respect, the two situation are similar.

Question # 13

Is it possible to add a vector quantity to a scalar quantity?

Ans 1: No it is not possible to add a vector quantity to a scalar quantity because the physical quantities of same nature can be added. Vectors can be added to vectors and scalars are added in scalars,but the vectors can't be added to scalar.

Question # 14

Differentiate between geyser and aquifer.

Ans 1: Geyser isa hot spring that discharges steam and hot water, intermittently releasing an explosive column into the air

Aquifer is a layer of rock holding water that allows water to percolate through it with pressure.

Define optical rotation. Give its practical use.

Ans 1: When a plane polarized light is passed through certain crystals, they rotate the plane of polarization. It is called optical rotation.
Organic solutions such as sugar, tartaric acid etc., show optical rotation which is used to determine their concentration in the solutions.

Two vectors have unequal magnitude.Can their components be equal in magnitude?

Ans 1: No, the components of two vectors cannot be equal in magnitude if the two vector have unequal magnitudes.

Question # 17

Define base quantities and units.

Ans 1: Base quantities: Base quantities are quantities on the basic of which other quantities are expressed.
Ans 2: Examples: Length mass, time, electric current, temperature, intensity of light, amount of substance.
Ans 3: Base Units: The units that decribe base quantities are called base units.
Ans 4: Examples: Second ampere, kelvin, kilogram metre.

What is the function of collimator in a spectrometer?

Ans 1: Collimator is used to make the light rays parallel. It consists of a fixed metallic tube, a convex lens and an adjustable slit.

What do you mean by coherent source ? Explain a common method for producing two coherent sources.

Ans 1: The monochromatic sources of light which emit waves, having a constant phase difference are called coherent sources.
A common method of producing two coherent light beams is to use a monochromatic source to illuminate a screen containing two small holes, usually in the shape of slits. The light emerging from the two slits is coherent because a single source produces the original beam and two slits serve only too split it into two parts.

When a rocket re enters the atmosphere, its nose con becomes very hot.Where does this heat energy come from?

Ans 1: The atmosphere of earth contains a large number of dust particles,gases and water vapours.So when a rocket enters into the atmosphere and passes through these particles, due to the force of friction, the kinetic energy of the rocket is lost in the form of heat. That's why its nose cone becomes very hot.
