If you've ever tried to find "the" MBBS syllabus, you've met the problem. There isn't one document. There's a curriculum per university, several versions of each, and a fair amount of unofficial copying online. This page shows what you study each year and where the official files are.

Modular or old pattern: which applies to you?

• Modular integrated curriculum (2K23). UHS introduced it from the 2022-23 session. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and clinical subjects are taught together in system-based modules (blood, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and so on), grouped into blocks.

• Old pattern. Older batches were examined subject by subject. KMU's date-sheet listings still show separate "old pattern" sheets for some years, so both systems co-exist.

Ask your college which one your batch follows before you download anything.

Year-by-year: what you study

First year

Under UHS's modular system, first year is organised in blocks. Block 1 covers a Foundation module and the Hematopoietic and Lymphatic module. Block 2 includes Musculoskeletal and Locomotion. Block 3 includes Cardiovascular and Respiratory. Alongside the modules, students study Islamiyat, Civics and Pakistan Studies, and build clinical skills through the Clinical Foundation rotations.

The old pattern's first- and second-year core was anatomy (gross anatomy, histology and embryology), physiology, biochemistry, behavioural sciences, communication skills and research methodology, and Islamic and Pakistan Studies.

Second year

By the block numbering, second year covers Blocks 4 to 6. I didn't see that year's module list, so read it from the official curriculum volumes.

Third year

Third year's Block 7 starts with a Foundation-2 module that integrates pathology, pharmacology and forensic medicine with clinical topics in surgery and medicine. UHS's academic calendar for 2025-26 places the third-year block exams in July, October and January. Assessment combines written papers with structured practical and clinical exams (OSPE, OSCE and similar formats).

In the old pattern, third year was examined as pharmacology, pathology and microbiology, forensic medicine and toxicology, and behavioural sciences.

Fourth year

The old pattern's fourth year covered ENT, eye, community medicine and special pathology, with stage-wise internal assessments in some colleges. Under the modular curriculum I did not see a fourth-year module list, so check UHS's or KMU's documents.

Final year

UHS's final-year documents include a Reproductive and Child Health curriculum, a clinical rotation schedule (2025-26), a clinical training manual, and a notification revising the marks distribution for paediatrics. The traditional final-year subjects were medicine and allied specialties, surgery and allied specialties, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics.

UHS's syllabus page lists the Modular Integrated MBBS Curriculum 2K23 in several forms: version 2.0, and version 3.0 in three volumes with annexures for clinical and OSPE skills. It also has a first-year mock paper, third-year pharmacology material, the final-year rotation schedule and PMDC's revised nomenclature of MBBS professional examinations.

Your college's study guides

Colleges publish block-level study guides that break the curriculum into learning objectives. For example, LMDC's first-year Block 1 guide from 2024 lists the Foundation-1 topics in detail, from general anatomy to gametogenesis. Ask your college for the current version.

How to use the syllabus

1. Match your batch to the right curriculum version before you study from a PDF. Old versions circulate widely.

2. Read the learning objectives for each module. They tell you what can be asked.

3. Check the assessment blueprint for marks distribution, especially if a notification changed it.

4. Practise with mock papers. UHS publishes a first-year mock paper for the modular system.
