Legal education here goes back to 1868, when the University Law College, now part of Punjab University, opened its doors. Today the map is crowded. Universities award the degree, and hundreds of affiliated law colleges teach it under their banners. The one filter that matters before anything else is recognition: the institution must be approved by HEC and the Pakistan Bar Council, otherwise the degree will not qualify you for enrollment as an advocate.
Government institutions win on fees and reputation, and they charge for it in merit. Reported aggregates at the most sought-after ones often start above 80%. Semester fees at public law colleges are reported to run from roughly PKR 14,000 to PKR 88,000, with the University of Malakand cited as the cheapest at about PKR 14,000 per semester.
Private law colleges suit students who clear the LAT but miss the merit line at public universities. Punjab has the densest cluster, and most are affiliated with Punjab University, Bahauddin Zakariya University or Islamia University Bahawalpur. Some also run the University of London external LLB alongside the local degree. Expect higher fees, and check each institution's own admission policy, because some add their own test on top of the LAT.
Lahore is the country's densest law-education hub, so most applicants end up comparing here. The short version: University Law College (PU) leads on public prestige, LUMS leads on the premium private side, and Punjab Law College, Pakistan College of Law and Quaid-e-Azam Law College are the established affiliated names. For the full city breakdown with more institutions, see the LLB universities in Lahore list.
A public-sector seat depends on the LAT plus your intermediate marks. Punjab University's published criteria, for example, ask for at least 55% in FA/FSc or equivalent, a LAT score of 50 or above, and its own admission test, with an age cap of 24. Other universities weigh matric and intermediate differently, so read each policy before you apply. Full requirements are on the LLB eligibility criteria page.
The Law Admission Test is run by HEC's Education Testing Council and is compulsory for the 5-year LLB at recognized institutions. You need 50 marks out of 100 to pass. The paper covers English, general knowledge, Pakistan Studies, Islamiyat, Urdu and mathematics, plus an essay and a personal statement. Results are reported to stay valid for two years, and registration is online at etc.hec.gov.pk. Sittings are scheduled several times a year, so confirm current dates on the LAT test page before you plan.
Once you have a shortlist, compare the real cost on the LLB fee structure page, and track exam timelines on the LLB date sheet page.
There is no single official winner. The University of the Punjab, Quaid-i-Azam University, IIUI and LUMS are the names that appear most often. The right pick depends on your merit, budget and city.
Yes. It is mandatory for the 5-year LLB at HEC and PBC-recognized institutions, and the pass mark is 50 out of 100.
University Law College (PU), LUMS, Punjab Law College, Pakistan College of Law and Quaid-e-Azam Law College are among the most cited.
Punjab University, Quaid-i-Azam University, IIUI, the University of Karachi, SZABUL and the University of Balochistan's law college, among others.
The LAT requires 12 years of education in any discipline, so FA, FSc, ICom, ICS and A Level students can all qualify. Individual universities may add their own percentage criteria.
