A BS (Bachelor of Science) in Pakistan is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate degree, usually 130 to 136 credit hours, open to students with FSc or FA (science-based programs normally need FSc). BS courses fall into six groups: natural sciences, computing and IT, agriculture and health sciences, social sciences and languages, management and commerce, and engineering. Pick your group below, then open the course outline page for your subject.
If you’ve just finished intermediate and are staring at a prospectus with fifty program names, this page is the shortcut. Find your subject group, check the eligibility note, then jump to the outline to see what you’ll actually study for four years.
A BS is a four-year, semester-based undergraduate degree that replaced the older two-year BA/BSc plus MA/MSc route at most universities. It runs eight semesters. Course loads vary by university and program, but published schemes of studies sit in roughly the 130 to 136 credit-hour range. Examples include 136 credit hours at one Karachi university’s BS English, 133 for a BS Physics scheme, and a 130 to 136 range in the BS English curriculum at a Sindh university.
Every BS scheme blends the same layers: compulsory courses (Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies or Ethics, functional English), foundation courses, major courses, and electives. The mix differs by program, which is why outlines matter.
The lists below draw on the programs published in current admission lists at Pakistani universities. Availability differs by campus and intake, so treat this as a map and confirm with the university you’re applying to.
BS Physics, BS Chemistry, BS Mathematics, BS Statistics, BS Botany, BS Zoology, BS Biochemistry, BS Biotechnology, BS Microbiology, BS Applied Physics, BS Environmental Science, BS Geology, BS Bioinformatics, BS Food Science and Technology, BS Forensic Science.
Most of these ask for FSc. Statistics is more flexible, and at least one university accepts FSc or FA for it.
BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BS Software Engineering, BS Data Science, BS Artificial Intelligence, BS Multimedia and Gaming, BS Internet of Things. Check each university’s own rules on required intermediate subjects (for example, mathematics) before applying.
BS Agriculture (with majors such as Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Protection, Food Science and Technology or Biotechnology), BS Human Nutrition and Dietetics, BS Medical Laboratory Technology, BS Optometry, BS Forestry, BS Healthcare Management.
BS English (Language and Literature or Linguistics), BS Urdu, BS Psychology, BS Sociology, BS International Relations, BS Political Science, BS Mass Communication, BS Economics, BS Education, BS Pakistan Studies, BS Islamic Studies, BS Physical Education. Eligibility is typically FSc or FA, and a few programs prefer a related intermediate subject (for instance English, civics or sociology).
BS Commerce, BS Banking and Finance, BS Accounting and Finance, BS Public Administration, plus BBA (Hons) at universities that run it as a separate four-year track.
BS Electrical Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Civil Engineering, BS Computer Engineering. If you want a professional engineering license, check the program’s accreditation status with the relevant regulator before you enroll.

| Program | Best for | Outline |
|---|---|---|
| BS English | Literature, linguistics, teaching | bs english course outline · QAU |
| BS Physics | FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS | bs physics course outline · UoP |
| BS Statistics | Strong in math and data | bs statistics course outline · IUB |
| PU BS IT | Punjab University applicants | PU official · Curriculum PDF |

Most outlines show eight semesters, with 15 to 18 credit hours in a typical semester. Each course shows a code, a title, a credit-hour value (for example 3+0 for theory, 2+1 when a lab is attached) and a type: compulsory, foundational, subject-specific (major), interdisciplinary or elective.
First semesters are deliberately broad. The two examples below are taken from published university schemes of studies, so you can see how different majors start.
| BS English (HEC-style scheme) | BS Physics (one Punjab university scheme) |
|---|---|
| Study Skills | Fundamentals of Mechanics |
| Pakistan Studies | Waves, Oscillations and Optics |
| English I: Reading and Writing Skills | Mathematics-I (Algebra) |
| Introduction to Literary Studies | Introduction to Computers |
| Introduction to Language Studies | Pakistan Studies |
| Introduction to Geography | Introduction to Statistics |
Notice how the English student still takes general courses, while the Physics student starts math-heavy. By semester five, majors and electives take over.
The default is simple. You need an intermediate (FSc, FA or an equivalent recognized by the Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen). The details change by subject.
Science programs such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Microbiology generally ask for FSc. Some physics programs go further and specify a second division in FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS with physics and mathematics. Social science and language programs often accept FA as well as FSc, and a few prefer a related intermediate subject. One Karachi university’s BS English asks for 50 percent overall and at least 55 percent in English.
Always check the university’s current admission notice. Minimum marks and subject requirements are set by each institution, not by this page.
You’ll see three labels on university program lists. They are not the same thing.
A BS is the standard four-year route after intermediate. An Associate Degree (ADP) is a shorter two-year program that some universities offer, and a few let students step up into BS afterwards. A Bridging semester program is built for students who already hold a BA or BSc and want to convert to the BS pathway. KFUEIT’s current list, for instance, shows bridging versions of BS Botany, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology next to the regular programs.
Start with your intermediate group, since it decides what you’re eligible for. Then check the course outline, because the subject name rarely tells you how much of the degree is math, labs, reading or fieldwork. Finally, compare universities on the things outlines can’t show: lab facilities, faculty, location and fee structure. Your best shortlist usually comes from three outlines, not thirty program names.
BS programs in Pakistan span natural sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology), computing (BSCS, IT, Software Engineering, AI), agriculture and health (Agriculture, Nutrition, MLT), social sciences and languages (English, Psychology, Economics, IR), management (Commerce, Banking and Finance) and engineering.
A BS is a four-year program of eight semesters, with most schemes of studies totaling about 130 to 136 credit hours.
Yes, for many programs. Social science, language and management programs such as English, Psychology, Sociology and Pakistan Studies commonly accept FA or FSc. Science programs like Physics, Chemistry and Botany generally require FSc.
A typical HEC-style first semester includes Study Skills, Pakistan Studies, English I (Reading and Writing Skills), Introduction to Literary Studies and Introduction to Language Studies, with one general elective such as Introduction to Geography.
A bridging semester program lets students who already hold a BA or BSc convert their qualification to the BS pathway, so they don’t repeat four full years.
Each university publishes its own scheme of studies on its department or program page, and Punjab University lists outlines for its programs on its course outline page. Ilmkidunya’s subject pages summarize outlines across universities so you can compare before you apply.
