To apply for a BS in Pakistan you need an intermediate qualification (FA, FSc, ICS or A-Level) in a group that suits your degree. At GCUF the minimum is 45% for most programs, 50% for CS, IT, Software Engineering, Data Science and BBA, and 60% for Pharm-D, DPT and BS Electrical Engineering. PU sets no single percentage. You need FA/FSc, must be 24 or younger for regular seats, and are ranked on a merit formula in which matric counts for one-quarter weight. BS Software Engineering needs Mathematics, though pre-medical students can usually enter by clearing deficiency courses. BS Physics needs Physics and Mathematics at intermediate level.
Timing first. GCUF’s Fall 2026-27 forms closed on 28 September 2026, and PU’s 2026-27 online portal closed in early August. GCUF also ran a Spring round last year that closed in mid-January 2026. If you’re reading this now, you’re preparing for the next cycle. That’s the best time to fix a weak spot such as a missing Maths requirement or an unverified equivalence certificate. See the live notices on our BS admissions page.
A BS is a four-year, eight-semester degree taken after 12 years of schooling. It has replaced the old two-year BA/BSc at most public universities. Three separate things decide whether you get a seat, and people often mix them up.
Eligibility is the pass/fail gate: your intermediate group, your minimum percentage, your age. Merit is the ranking among everyone who clears the gate, usually built from matric and intermediate marks. An entry test, where a university uses one, is an extra hurdle on top. You can be fully eligible and still miss out if the merit line lands above your percentage.
Rules differ by university, but the pattern is consistent.
| Your intermediate group | Programs it normally opens |
|---|---|
| FSc Pre-Engineering | Sciences, computing, engineering technology, plus arts and commerce degrees |
| ICS | Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, Data Science, Physics, Mathematics |
| FSc Pre-Medical | Life sciences, chemistry, health programs; computing degrees only with deficiency Maths |
| FA | Humanities, languages, social sciences, psychology, economics, mass communication |
| A-Level | Equivalent group, but you need an IBCC equivalence certificate |
If you studied the wrong group for the degree you want, don’t give up yet. Many universities admit pre-medical students into computing programs on the condition that they pass extra Mathematics courses in the first year. Details are below.
Government College University Faisalabad publishes one eligibility sheet for the whole university. The official Admission Eligibility Criteria PDF and the Admission Policy are worth saving. For fresh updates, see our GCUF admission notices.
The sheet works in three tiers.
| Minimum marks | Applies to |
|---|---|
| 45% | Every program not listed below |
| 50% | BS CS, IT, Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, BBA, Business Analytics, Accounting & Finance, Islamic Banking & Finance, Financial Technology, Bioinformatics, Human Nutrition & Dietetics, Eastern Medicine, Engineering Technology (B.E.Tech) |
| 60% | Pharm-D, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Medical Lab Technology, Medical Imaging, Surgical Technology, Orthotics & Prosthetics, BS Electrical Engineering |
The 50% and 60% tiers come from outside regulators such as the Pakistan Engineering Council and the National Technology Council, so GCUF can’t relax them.
Most arts, social science and commerce degrees accept FA, FSc or ICS. Chemistry and Applied Chemistry take FSc pre-medical or pre-engineering. Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology want FSc pre-medical. Mathematics requires that you studied Maths at intermediate. Computing degrees (CS, IT, SE, Data Science) take pre-engineering or ICS directly. Pre-medical students are also accepted if they study two deficiency Mathematics courses in the first and second semesters.
GCUF says admission is strictly on merit, drawn from intermediate marks. Its Fall 2026 schedule lists admission tests only for BS Fine Arts, Engineering Technology, MS/MPhil and PhD, so most regular BS seats are decided on marks alone. Your SSC and HSSC certificates must be verified by IBCC within the first semester. If you’re later found not to meet the criteria of the program you entered, GCUF can cancel the admission at any stage without notice.
The University of the Punjab runs one central process for its Lahore departments and its Gujranwala, Jhelum and Pothohar campuses. The rules below come from the 2026-27 undergraduate guidelines.
Regular BS programs take FA/FSc or equivalent, and the applicant must be no older than 24 on the closing date of the online form. Self-supporting, replica, afternoon and evening programs have no age limit. If your Part-II result is pending, you can apply provisionally on your Part-I result. That admission is cancelled automatically if you fail Part-II. Engineering programs need at least 60% in FSc pre-engineering, pre-medical, ICS, DAE or A-Level, plus a recognised test such as E-CAT, a PU engineering test or the NUST test.
For BS 5th semester (bridging), you need BA, BSc or an Associate Degree, and the age ceiling is 26. Half the seats go to PU graduates.
PU’s published basic formula for BS gives matric one-quarter weight: add a quarter of your matric marks to your full FSc marks, then divide by the total possible on the same basis.
Take a student with 1000 out of 1200 in matric and 900 out of 1100 in FSc. A quarter of matric is 250 out of 300. Add FSc: 1150 out of 1400, which is 82.14%. Extra marks (such as sports or Hafiz-e-Quran where a department applies them) are added on top. Every applicant also has to sit PU’s admission test or the specific departmental test, even those applying on reserved seats. Subject-wise criteria appear in the online form, so read them before you pay the fee.
PU’s Directorate of Students Affairs publishes the previous year’s closing merit. These are 2025 figures for morning 1st-semester seats. Treat them as a guide, since 2026 lists can move.
| Program | 2025 closing merit |
|---|---|
| BS Computer Science | 87.18% (new campus), 86.02% (old campus) |
| BS Software Engineering | 85.6% (new campus), 83.55% (old campus) |
| BS Information Technology | 84.13% (new campus) |
| BS Physics | 76.37% (morning), 50.71% (evening/replica/self-support) |
| BS Mathematics | 59.65% |
The gap between eligibility and merit matters here. A student with 55% can legally apply to BS Software Engineering at PU. The seat last year closed above 83%.
PU deducts two marks from your percentage for each late session, up to five. Two percent seats each are reserved for sports and co-curricular activities. There are also reserved seats for special persons, religious minorities and nominees from Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Sindh. The application challan for 2026-27 was Rs 550.
You need Physics and Mathematics in your intermediate. FSc pre-engineering and ICS (with Physics and Maths) qualify cleanly almost everywhere. At GCUF the BS Physics entry sits under the basic 45% floor, and the sheet lists FSc pre-engineering, pre-medical and ICS with Physics and Mathematics. If you’re coming from pre-medical, confirm with the department how the Maths requirement is handled for you. Some universities make pre-medical students pass a zero-credit Maths course alongside semester one. A few insist on a second division and reject a third division anywhere in your record.
Plan around merit rather than the floor. PU’s 2025 morning closing merit for Physics was 76.37%, while evening and self-supporting seats closed near 50%. Browse current notices on BS Physics admissions
The standard national rule is at least 50% in intermediate with Mathematics. That’s GCUF’s number for BS Software Engineering, and a common one at private and public universities. Pre-medical students are usually admitted with 6 credit hours of Mathematics to clear in the first two semesters. GCUF sets two deficiency courses in the first and second semesters.
Where the rules tighten is merit, as the PU table above shows. For a comparison across universities, see our page on BS Software Engineering eligibility, and for the neighbouring degree, BS Computer Science eligibility.
| Program | Typical requirement (GCUF sheet) |
|---|---|
| BS Mathematics | Intermediate with Mathematics studied |
| BS Chemistry / Applied Chemistry | FSc pre-medical or pre-engineering, or A-Level |
| BS Botany, Zoology, Microbiology | FSc pre-medical or A-Level |
| BS Environmental Sciences, Climate Change | FSc pre-medical or pre-engineering, ICS, A-Level |
| BS Economics, English, Mass Communication | FA/FSc/ICS/A-Level |

Matric and intermediate result cards, your CNIC or B-Form, passport-size photos, domicile where the program asks for it, and a character certificate if requested. A-Level and foreign-qualification holders need an IBCC equivalence certificate. Provisional applicants need a result card for the exam they’ve actually cleared so far. Keep scanned copies in one folder, because online portals reject mismatched or blurry uploads.
Three mistakes account for most cancellations. The first is applying to a program whose group requirement you don’t meet, such as a pre-medical student entering computing without checking the deficiency-course rule. The second is crossing the age ceiling at PU without noticing that the limit is measured on the form’s closing date. The third is delayed IBCC verification, which GCUF treats as a ground for cancellation. Fix these before the form opens, not after.
You need an intermediate qualification (FA, FSc, ICS or A-Level) in a group that fits your degree. Minimum marks vary: GCUF asks 45% for most programs, 50% for computing and business programs, and 60% for medical and electrical engineering programs.
GCUF requires at least 45% in intermediate for most BS programs, 50% for CS, IT, Software Engineering, Data Science and BBA, and 60% for Pharm-D, DPT and BS Electrical Engineering. Admission is on merit, and SSC/HSSC certificates must be verified by IBCC within the first semester.
PU requires FA/FSc or equivalent, an age of 24 or under for regular programs, and participation in the PU admission test or the departmental test. Merit is calculated using one-quarter of matric marks plus full intermediate marks.
Regular BS applicants must be no older than 24 on the closing date of the online form. There is no age limit for self-supporting, replica, afternoon and evening programs. The limit for BS 5th semester is 26.
PU adds one-quarter of your matric marks to your intermediate marks, plus any additional marks you qualify for, and divides by the total on the same basis. Two marks are deducted for each late session, up to five.
Usually yes, at universities that accept them. GCUF admits pre-medical students into computing programs if they pass two deficiency Mathematics courses in the first and second semesters. Other universities ask for about 6 credit hours of extra Mathematics.
You need an intermediate with Physics and Mathematics, which means FSc pre-engineering or ICS. GCUF applies its basic 45% floor to BS Physics. Pre-medical students should confirm with the department how the Mathematics requirement is handled.
For regular BS programs, GCUF admits on merit. Its Fall 2026 schedule listed tests only for BS Fine Arts, Engineering Technology, MS/MPhil and PhD programs.
GCUF’s Fall 2026-27 forms closed on 28 September 2026, and PU’s 2026-27 online portal closed in early August. The next windows to prepare for are GCUF’s Spring round, which closed in mid-January last year, and Fall 2027.
