MPhil admission 2026 at major universities

PU MPhil admission 2026: University of the Punjab

PU ran one of the country’s largest MPhil rounds. Online forms opened on 22–23 June and closed on 13 July 2026. Written tests ran between 20 and 25 July, depending on the department. Interviews followed from 3 August, the first merit list appeared on 17 August, and classes started on 1 September.

Applicants needed 16 years of education (120 credit hours) from an HEC-recognized institution and no third division in their record. The written test and the interview each carried a 50% pass mark. Applicants from other disciplines had to pass a subject test and complete 6–9 credit hours of deficiency courses. BZU MPhil admission 2026: Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan

BZU admits in rounds, and departments close on different days. One Fall 2026 advertisement ran from 23 to 30 July. A later notice, including MPhil Botany, set 7 September as the last date, with an entry test on 9 September. Spring 2026 shows the usual rhythm: forms closed on 2 January, the entry test was on 5 January, and merit lists followed on 6, 8 and 10 January. . AIOU MPhil admission: Allama Iqbal Open University

AIOU set 17 August 2026 as the last date for MS, MPhil and PhD admissions in the Autumn semester and said there would be no extension. The extension to 6 October applied only to lower-level programs such as Matric, FA and B.Ed. Entry tests were held at the H-8 Academic Complex in Islamabad: Education on 24 August, Social Sciences and Humanities on 27 August, and Sciences on 28 August. GCUF MPhil admission 2026: Government College University Faisalabad

GCUF opened Fall 2026-27 admissions for MS and MPhil in morning and evening (replica) classes. An earlier round closed on 17 August with a test on 19 August. The second round closed on 28 September, with tests on 29 September. Last cycle’s Spring 2026 rules are a useful guide. Applicants could qualify through a departmental test (60% to pass) or a GRE/HAT General score (50%). Employed applicants needed a No Objection Certificate. MPhil admission at Sindh University, Jamshoro

The University of Sindh admits MPhil students under HEC’s Graduate Education Policy 2023, and schedules differ by department and round. Registration for the first round ran from 29 March to 16 April, with tests on 2 and 3 May. A second round ran from 7 to 26 June, with a test on 5 July. Some departments published their own timetables, so read your department’s line in the notice.

The usual eligibility is a master’s or four-year BS (16 years) in the relevant subject with a 2.40 CGPA out of 4.00 or 50% marks in the annual system. Applicants also need 50% in the admission test or a valid GRE/HAT General score of 50%. MPhil admissions in Lahore 2026

MPhil admissions in Lahore have more notices than any other city, across public universities, engineering and medical institutes, and private campuses.

Eligibility for MPhil admission in Pakistan

Every university sets its own cut-offs, but the core rules repeat across notices.

Academic qualification. You need 16 years of education from an HEC-recognized university, such as a four-year BS, MA or MSc, usually in the subject you apply for. Applicants from another discipline usually sit a subject test and take deficiency courses. Final-year students can often apply as “result awaiting” and submit the result before the interview. Entry test. Fall 2026 admissions ran on each university’s existing criteria: a departmental test or a valid GRE/HAT General score, with a 50% pass mark at most universities. Some departments set 60%. If you already hold a valid score, check whether your target university accepts it before you pay for another test.

Interview and merit. The test is the gate and the merit list is the ranking. Marks from your degree, the test and the interview are combined, and seats are filled across first, second and third merit lists. Missing the fee deadline after a merit list drops you from that list.

HEC’s GRE/HAT rule: what changed and when it applies

In May 2026, HEC announced that MS/MPhil and PhD admissions would require GRE/HAT scores through its Education Testing Council. HEC then postponed the requirement to Fall 2027 after universities asked for more time. For Fall 2026, universities kept their existing criteria.

If you apply this year or for a Spring intake, expect your university’s usual test unless its advertisement says otherwise. If you plan to start in Fall 2027, prepare for a GRE/HAT General score. Read HEC’s wording on the Graduate Education Policy page and in your university’s advertisement before booking any test.

Documents to keep ready

Typical requirements are your CNIC, degree and transcripts, the fee receipt and recent photographs. Employed applicants need an NOC, and degrees from abroad or outside the university may need an equivalence certificate. Some notices also ask for domicile or experience certificates, so go by the advertisement. Carry originals to the interview.

How to apply for MPhil admission, step by step

  1. Shortlist two or three universities and check that your department offers MPhil this cycle.
  2. Read the advertisement for eligibility, last date, test date and fee.
  3. Register on the official admission portal and enter your academic record accurately.
  4. Pay the processing fee by the method the notice names (PU’s Fall 2026 fee was Rs 2,050) and upload the receipt.
  5. Download your roll number slip once eligible lists are published, then sit the test.
  6. Attend the interview with original documents.
  7. Check each merit list and deposit your fee before that list’s deadline.

MPhil or MS?

At most Pakistani universities, MPhil and MS are both postgraduate research degrees at the same HEC level, usually about two years of coursework followed by a thesis. Some departments offer one and some offer both under a single notice, so read the program name in the advertisement.

When will the next MPhil intake open?

No Spring 2027 dates have been announced. Last cycle’s pattern is a rough guide: BZU’s Spring 2026 round closed on 2 January and GCUF’s on 6 January. Is HAT or GRE compulsory for MPhil admission?

Do I need an MPhil to do a PhD?

Not always, because HEC’s 2021 policy lets universities admit BS holders directly. Many departments still ask for an MS or MPhil, so confirm with your target department.
