The foundations of this multi-campus University were laid down by the British Colonial Authorities. It was the 4th largest institute of higher education established by the British Government in the subcontinent. The Punjab University was established as an educational reform in the repercussions of war of Independence (1857). The University of Punjab was different from other Universities established by the British Government. The Punjab University was established as a teaching, examining and research institution, unlike the previously established institute which were only teaching institutes. The Punjab University served the educational requirements of the entire subcontinent till partition. During the process of partition, the Punjab University was divided into two portions. The Indian Portion of the PU is situated in Chandigarh, India. Many major institutions that were previously affiliated to Punjab University have now become independent universities on their own, such as Government College University, Lahore and Medical and Engineering Colleges.
The highly reputed institution is situated in the historically and culturally significant city of Lahore. The Punjab University has two campuses in Lahore. The Allama Iqbal Campus is colloquially known as the old campus is conveniently located at Lower Mall Road. Whereas the new Campus which is called Quaid-e-Azam Campus is situated at the Canal Bank Road, Lahore. Both the campuses are easily approachable. The campus buildings have a state of the art infrastructure. The dignified buildings of the institute are surrounded by sprawling lush green gardens and equipped with latest facilities and technologies for the students. The multi-faceted campus of the University have spacious well-lit and well cross ventilated classrooms, halls and teaching centers. The Highly reputed institution houses one of the largest libraries of Pakistan which is stocked with thousands of books, research articles and publications. Other facilities include gymnasium, sport complexes, sport grounds, common rooms, prayer rooms and masjids. Some of the distinguishing features of the University include separate cafeterias for each departments, digital library and resource centers. The students are facilitated with a fleet of transport buses that ply between campus and various designated spots in the city. The transport service of PU can also be availed by students of nearby cities like Mureedkay and Kasur. The hostel services are also provided to the students for their ease and convenience.
The multi-disciplinary university has a wide array of course to offer to the students. The Punjab University is privileged to have one of the largest enrollment rate. The substantially large student body consists of 30,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral study programs. The long list of alumni include many well-known names and two Nobel laureates.

Allama Iqbal Campus is also known as the old campus which is located in the centre of Lahore. The name of this campus is originated after the great South Asian thinker and spiritual poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

Punjab University Library
It was established in 1873 as “Punjab University College Library”. The Punjab University College was raised to the status of a University in 1882 and it became the Punjab University Library from the same date.
