An MPhil is a research-focused, two-year Level 7 degree that follows a 16-year BS or Master’s and counts as 18 years of education. HEC-recognized universities typically ask for 16 years of schooling in a relevant discipline. Some institutions of the same type require a minimum CGPA around 2.5 out of 4.0, or 50% marks. A university entry test or a GRE/HAT General score is the usual gate. HEC postponed its GRE/HAT-only admission rule until 2027, so universities still run their own tests during 2026. Fall 2026 windows have mostly closed, and Spring 2027 is the next realistic intake.
The MPhil sits between a BS or Master’s and a PhD. You take advanced coursework in the first year, then spend the rest of the program on a research thesis. Typical programs run four semesters with about 30 credit hours, which is why most listings show two years, although part-time students sometimes take longer.
Two terms confuse applicants. HEC groups MS and MPhil together as Level 7, so the two degrees are treated as equivalent entry points to doctoral study. Universities often use “MS” for science and technology programs and “MPhil” for social sciences, humanities and some sciences, but the label is largely institutional habit.
You do not always need an MPhil to reach a PhD. HEC announced in 2021 that a BS holder can enrol directly in a doctorate if the university considers them prepared. Many universities still set an MS/MPhil as their own minimum, so check the department.

The baseline is a 16-year degree from an HEC-recognized institution in a relevant field. The CGPA floor varies by university. One public university lists 50% marks or 2.5 out of 4.0 for MPhil entry, and NUML uses the same figures for its programs. PhD admission needs at least 3.0 CGPA or 60% in the MS/MPhil, so a strong MPhil result matters if you plan to continue.
Working professionals should keep a no-objection certificate ready. GCUF, for example, requires an NOC from government, semi-government and private employees applying to MS/MPhil and PhD programs.

This is where most 2026 confusion came from. HEC’s notification in May 2026 made GRE/HAT General and subject tests mandatory for MPhil and PhD admissions from Fall 2026 and withdrew the clause letting universities run their own tests. Days later, HEC deferred the policy by a year because universities were not ready, with the new rule now taking effect from 2027.
For applicants, the practical position is:
For 2026 intakes, universities continue to conduct their own separate admission tests. For 2027 and later, expect the centralized GRE/HAT route to become the main gate. If you plan to apply in Spring 2027 or later, sitting the HAT early is the safer bet. Confirm the current rule with the HEC Education Testing Council and with your target department before paying any test fee.
Offerings and dates change each cycle, so treat this as a map of where to look. Each university’s own notice is the final word.
LUMS offers two MPhil tracks in its Humanities and Social Sciences department: Comparative Humanities, and Society, Culture and Politics. Applicants must take one of GRE General, NTS General or the LUMS Graduate Admission Test (LGAT). The Fall 2026 LGAT was held on 3 May 2026, so LUMS runs an early cycle compared with public universities.
QAU has the widest MPhil spread among the major public universities, covering biological sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. The departments in a 2026 listing include Biochemistry, Zoology, Mathematics, History, International Relations, Economics, Pakistan Studies, Criminology and Psychology. The Fall 2026 deadline for MPhil/MS applications was 21 August 2026, and entry tests ran on 25 to 27 August. QAU’s MPhil admission notice lists the departments and dates.
The University of the Punjab runs MS/MPhil admissions in regular and self-supporting shifts across many faculties. Its Fall 2026 notice was published in June 2026, and candidates without a thesis in a prior MS/MPhil can still apply but must complete a 6-credit-hour research thesis deficiency. For earlier notices, see the PU MPhil programs page.
Government College University Faisalabad offers two-year MPhil programs in morning and replica shifts. For Fall 2026-27, the online form deadline was 28 September 2026, with admission tests on 29 September. GCUF’s earlier criteria called for a 60% pass in the departmental test or 50% in GRE/HAT General. See the GCUF MPhil programs notice for the earlier cycle.
A June 2026 notice from the University of Lahore listed MPhil Biochemistry, English Linguistics, Public Health, Islamic Studies, Applied Economics, Mathematics and Forensic Science. Its postgraduate criteria ask for a relevant 16-year degree for MPhil/MS. The University of Lahore MPhil programs page tracks current advertisements, including the Sargodha campus.
Allama Iqbal Open University offers MPhil in education, Islamic studies, sciences and social sciences. Its Autumn 2026 notice listed MPhil Islamic Studies, Urdu, Education, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. The last date for PhD, MPhil/MS and MSc (Hons) in Autumn 2026 was 17 August. See the AIOU MPhil programs notice for the full list.
True online MPhil options are limited, and the honest answer is to look at the open and distance learning universities first. AIOU states that international students abroad can join its M.Phil, PhD, MBA and diploma programs offered entirely through its online learning management system. The Virtual University lists MPhil programs including Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Business Administration and Computer Science.
Many conventional universities advertise flexible or weekend schedules, but that is not the same as an online degree. Always ask the admissions office whether the mode is fully online, blended or on campus, and confirm the degree carries the same HEC recognition.
An HEC-recognized MPhil means the university is on HEC’s list of recognized institutions and has permission to run that specific program. HEC issues a No Objection Certificate for a university’s MPhil programs before admissions can begin.
Before applying, check three things on the HEC website: the university appears among recognized institutions, its MPhil program has an approved status, and the degree-awarding campus is the one you are applying to. A recognized university is not enough on its own if the campus or program is not approved. If you plan to apply for HEC or overseas scholarships later, an unrecognized degree will block your application.
Fees differ sharply between public and private universities, and between morning and self-support shifts. For a university-by-university comparison, see the MPhil fee structure guide. Funding options for graduate study are collected in the postgraduate scholarships section.
MPhil admissions run twice a year. Fall notices appear from roughly June to September. Spring notices cluster between November and January. In the last cycle, PU’s Spring 2026 notice ran from 1 to 10 December 2025, GCUF’s closed on 17 January 2026, and QAU’s deadline was 28 January 2026. As of 12 October 2026, most Fall 2026 windows are closed, so plan your documents and test preparation for Spring 2027. The postgraduate admission page tracks new notices as they appear.
An MPhil is a two-year, research-based graduate degree taken after a 16-year BS or Master’s. It combines advanced coursework with a thesis and counts as 18 years of education. HEC treats MS and MPhil as equivalent Level 7 degrees.

HEC postponed the GRE/HAT-only policy to 2027, and universities continue to hold their own admission tests during 2026. From 2027, expect centralized GRE/HAT General and subject tests to become the standard route.

You need a 16-year degree in a relevant discipline from an HEC-recognized institution. Some universities set the minimum at 2.5 out of 4.0 CGPA or 50% marks. Employed applicants may also need an NOC from their employer.

Not always. HEC’s 2021 policy lets universities admit BS graduates directly into a PhD if they judge them prepared. Many departments still require an MS or MPhil, and a strong CGPA of 3.0 or 60% is required where one is used.
