MBA Syllabus in Pakistan 2026: Semester Wise Subjects and PDF Downloads

Semester-wise MBA syllabus in Pakistan for 3.5, 2 and 1.5-year programmes: core subjects, specializations and PDF downloads from PU, IBA, LUMS and more.

MBA Syllabus in Pakistan 2026: Semester-Wise Subjects and PDF Downloads

There is no single national MBA syllabus in Pakistan. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) provides the programme structure, and each university publishes its own scheme of study with course codes, credit hours and course outlines. What you study depends mostly on the length of the programme you join: 3.5 years, 2 years or 1.5 years.

This page explains how those structures differ, which subjects most schemes share, what specializations look like, and where to download syllabus PDFs for Punjab University, IBA Karachi, GCUF, IIU Islamabad, LUMS, AWKUM and BZU Multan.

MBA programme structures

Programme

Usually for

Typical credit load

Example

MBA 3.5 years

Graduates of a 14-year degree (BA, BSc, B.Com)

About 100+ credit hours over 7 semesters

AWKUM: 99 credit hours plus a 6-credit-hour thesis

MBA 2 years

Graduates of a 16-year degree

Minimum 60 credit hours under the HEC structure

Bahria University and IBM Lahore: 60 credit hours; Lahore School of Economics Executive MBA: 66

MBA 1.5 years

Business graduates, such as BBA or 4-year B.Com

Roughly 30–36 credit hours

Nazeer Hussain University: 33 credit hours, 11 courses

The 3.5-year route combines two years of BBS-level courses with a 1.5-year MBA, according to a copy of the HEC MBA structure (March 2012). Under the same structure, an MBA is treated as equivalent to an MS for most purposes, including PhD admission. Eligibility conditions differ by university, so check the MBA eligibility criteria before choosing a programme.

How the semesters build up

2-year MBA

Most 2-year schemes follow one pattern:

  • Semester 1: foundation courses (accounting, management, marketing, statistics, communication).

  • Semester 2: functional courses such as HRM, financial management, cost or managerial accounting, and research methods.

  • Semester 3: strategy and corporate finance, with specialization courses starting. At Bahria University, the third semester also includes a dissertation proposal.

  • Semester 4: specialization courses and a thesis, project or electives. At IBM Lahore, the final semester includes Project Management and Organizational Behavior alongside electives.

3.5-year MBA (example: AWKUM)

Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan runs a 7-semester scheme with 99 credit hours plus a 6-credit-hour comprehensive research thesis.

  • Semesters I–II: Business Communication, Fundamentals of Business, Financial Accounting, Principles of Management, Computer Orientation and Packages; then Advanced Business Communication, Human Resource Management, Business Statistics, Business Economics and Principles of Marketing.

  • Semesters III–IV: Marketing Management, Strategic Management, Cost Accounting, Business Finance, Organizational Theory and Behavior; then Financial Management, Business Law, Consumer Behavior, Project Planning and Management and Total Quality Management.

  • Semesters V–VII: Business Research Methods, Managerial Economics, International Business and WTO; Financial Institutions and Markets, SME and Entrepreneurship, E-commerce; then Corporate Governance, electives and the thesis.

University of Gujrat also lists a 7-semester, 3.5-year scheme, ending with a research project and courses on management theory and global business trends. Government College University Faisalabad's scheme uses the notation 3(3-0), meaning 3 credit hours, with 3 lecture hours and no practical component.

1.5-year MBA

Short programmes skip the foundation courses. Nazeer Hussain University's 1.5-year curriculum has 33 credit hours across 11 courses, covering Strategic Management, Advanced Research Methods, Strategic Marketing, Strategic Finance, Change Management, electives and a thesis proposal and defence. Capital University's 1.5-year MBA lists a minimum of 30 credit hours over three semesters. NCBA&E Lahore also runs a three-semester structure, with project management, supply chain management, marketing research, corporate law and a dissertation.

MBA specializations and electives

Specializations usually begin in the second year of a 2-year programme, or the last two semesters of a 3.5-year one. AWKUM's scheme shows how broad the menu can be:

  • Accounting and Finance (18 electives): Corporate Finance, Investment and Portfolio Management, Islamic Banking and Finance, Auditing, Financial Risk Management, Taxation Management, Banking Law and Practices.

  • Human Resource Management (13 electives): Training and Development, Compensation Management, Recruitment and Selection, Performance Management, Strategic HRM, Labor Law in Pakistan.

  • Marketing (14 electives): Sales Management, Brand Management, International Marketing, Marketing Research, E-Marketing, Retail Management, Marketing of Services.

IIU Islamabad's 2-year scheme lists graduate specializations including Management, E-Business, Global Entrepreneurship and Supply Chain Management. Which electives actually run in a given semester depends on the department, so confirm with it before planning.

What a course outline contains

The AWKUM PDF is a useful example because it includes outlines, not just course titles. Each course page lists 3 credit hours, 16 weeks, 48 contact hours, the method of instruction, the topics and recommended books.

For example, Financial Management moves from the role of the finance function, financial statements and cash flow into time value of money, ratio analysis, capital budgeting methods, cost of capital, bond and stock valuation, risk and return, dividend policy and capital structure. Business Research Methods runs from problem formulation and hypotheses through research design, sampling and data collection to statistical tools and report writing.

When you open any university's PDF, look for the same pattern: course code, credit hours, topic list and reference books.

BBA exemptions and credit hours

Business graduates often complete an MBA faster. According to the March 2012 HEC structure, a BBS or BBA holder can be given an exemption of 30 credit hours (10 courses) towards a 2-year MBA. PIDE describes a 1.5-year path for graduates with relevant business education, with exemptions of up to 30–36 credit hours decided by the business department. IIU's scheme refers to exemptions of up to 36 credit hours for BBA graduates under NCRC guidelines.

The limits are not identical everywhere. The exemption you get is decided by the university and your previous degree.

Universities revise schemes between batches. The session shown in a PDF may not match the session you join, so confirm the version with your department.

How to use a syllabus PDF

  1. Check the batch or session printed on the first page.

  2. Add up the credit hours and compare them with the programme length (see the structure table above).

  3. Look for the capstone: thesis, project or two substitute courses. Schemes differ, and the HEC structure allows a research or field project in an MBA to be replaced by two courses.

  4. Note which electives are listed for your specialization and ask which will run.

  5. Compare with past papers to see how topics are examined. The MBA past papers page collects them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one official MBA syllabus in Pakistan?

No. HEC provides a general programme structure, and each university publishes its own scheme of study. Two universities can offer the same MBA length with different course lists.

How many credit hours is an MBA in Pakistan?

It depends on the programme. The HEC structure sets a minimum of 60 credit hours for a 2-year MBA. Short programmes for business graduates are around 30–36 (for example 33 at Nazeer Hussain University). The 3.5-year route is longer: AWKUM's is 99 credit hours plus a 6-credit-hour thesis.

What are the first-semester subjects of an MBA?

Typically accounting, a principles-of-management course, business mathematics and statistics, marketing and business communication. Bahria, IBM Lahore and BZU all follow this pattern.

Does the syllabus differ for the 3.5-year, 2-year and 1.5-year MBA?

Yes. The 3.5-year programme includes foundation courses over two years before MBA-level courses. The 1.5-year programme assumes you already have a business background and moves quickly to strategy, research and electives.

Can BBA graduates skip some MBA courses?

Often yes. Sources describe exemptions of around 30–36 credit hours, but the decision belongs to the university and depends on your degree.

Is a thesis compulsory in an MBA?

It varies. Some universities require a thesis or dissertation, others offer a research project, an industrial project or additional courses instead.

Where can I download the MBA syllabus PDF?

Use the download table above for PU, IBA, GCUF, IIU, LUMS, AWKUM and BZU. For other universities, check the department page or the MBA subjects list.
