An undergraduate is a student studying for a first degree after intermediate (HSSC) at a college or university. In Pakistan, undergraduate programmes include the 4-year BS, the 2-year Associate Degree (ADP), BSc (Hons) and 5-year professional degrees such as Pharm-D and LLB. Once you finish, you become a graduate and can apply for MS/MPhil, which are graduate-level programmes.
The word works as both a noun ("I'm an undergraduate") and an adjective ("undergraduate degree"), and people often shorten it to "undergrad". The word is simple, but the Pakistani system has changed enough in recent years that many students are unsure where they fit.
If you have passed FA, FSc, ICS, I.Com or an equivalent and enrolled in a degree programme, you are an undergraduate. The term describes your level of study. It says nothing about how well you are doing. A student in the first semester and one in the final semester are both undergraduates.Outside the US, the same degree is sometimes called a "first degree". That is the best way to think of it: the first rung of university education.
Almost. Most undergraduate programmes lead to a bachelor's degree, but the ADP is also undergraduate and is not a bachelor's. So "bachelor's" is one type of undergraduate qualification, not the only one.
Pakistan has no single "undergraduate degree". Which programme you take depends on your field and how long you want to study.
| Programme | Typical duration | Entry level |
|---|---|---|
| Associate Degree (ADP/ADA/ADS) | 2 years | After intermediate |
| BS (e.g. BS Computer Science, BS English) | 4 years / 8 semesters | After intermediate |
| BSc (Hons) (e.g. Agriculture) | 4 years | After intermediate |
| Professional degrees (Pharm-D, DVM, LLB, Architecture) | 5 years | After intermediate |
A standard BS runs eight semesters over four years, usually 130 or more credit hours.
For decades "graduation" in Pakistan meant a two-year BA or BSc. That changed under HEC's undergraduate policy. HEC said the traditional two-year BA/BSc programmes were phased out in favour of Associate Degrees, and the current policy, Version 1.1, defines the Associate Degree as a two-year post-HSSC undergraduate qualification taught in semesters. That is why today's students choose between ADP and BS rather than BA and MA.
Yes. HEC's framework lets Associate Degree holders be considered for the fifth semester of a relevant four-year programme, so you can start with the shorter route and finish the four years later. You can compare your options in our guide to ADP subjects.
These three words describe three different stages, and Pakistani usage adds to the confusion because "graduate" has long meant BA/BSc holders.
| Term | Who it describes | Example in Pakistan |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | Studying for a first degree | BS student in semester 3 |
| Graduate | Has finished the first degree; the word also covers advanced study | BS holder; MS/MPhil student |
| Postgraduate | Studying after the first degree | MS, MPhil or PhD student |
A graduate student is someone pursuing an advanced degree after finishing an undergraduate programme. In practice, MS and MPhil need 16 years of education, which is the length of a four-year BS after intermediate.
The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) is one of the biggest names for first-degree programmes in agriculture and life sciences. Its undergraduate programmes cover BSc (Hons), DVM, Pharm-D and BS.
UAF runs its own entry test. Applicants register for the test and submit the admission application at the same time on the online portal. For the 2026-27 session, UAF held a third entrance test on August 30, 2026, after registrations from August 12 to 24, so the main cycle is over. For next year, check the official admissions portal and our page on UAF admission.
COMSATS University Islamabad offers BS and BBA programmes in computing, engineering, management, sciences and humanities. It has campuses in Islamabad, Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Sahiwal, Attock and Vehari, and the programme list differs by campus. For example, the Islamabad campus listed Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Bioinformatics among its BS programmes.
Applicants need a valid NTS NAT score, and one form can list several campuses in order of preference. The Fall 2026 deadlines ran from July to mid-August depending on campus, so confirm the next intake on COMSATS's official website
Start with the career you want, then work backwards. Medicine, law and pharmacy have fixed routes for law, see the LAT page. For teaching, look at B.Ed admission. If cost or time is tight, an ADP gets you a recognised qualification in two years with the BS door still open. Before applying, check that the programme is HEC-recognised and that your intermediate group meets the eligibility rule.
An undergraduate is a student working toward a first degree at a college or university after intermediate. The word describes your study level, not your marks or year.
In Urdu it is usually explained as "pehli degree ka talib-e-ilm", a student pursuing a first university degree after FA/FSc.
Yes. The 4-year BS is the main undergraduate degree in Pakistan, and it is usually 8 semesters long.
Yes. ADP is a 2-year undergraduate qualification that HEC introduced in place of BA/BSc, and it can lead to the fifth semester of a BS.
An undergraduate is studying for a first degree. A graduate has completed one, and the word also describes students in advanced programmes such as MS or MPhil.
UAF offers undergraduate BSc (Hons), DVM, Pharm-D and BS programmes. Applicants sit the UAF entry test and apply through the online admission portal.
COMSATS offers BS and BBA programmes across its campuses in computing, engineering, management, sciences and humanities. Entry needs an NTS NAT score, and programmes differ by campus.
Yes. A completed 4-year BS leads directly to MS or MPhil. After an ADP you would first complete the BS through the fifth-semester pathway.
