PMS Syllabus 2026: Compulsory Papers, Optional Groups and Official PDF
The Punjab PMS written exam is worth 1,200 marks. There are six compulsory papers of 100 marks each (600) and three optional subjects of 200 marks each (600), chosen with no more than one from any group. What is the PMS syllabus?
PMS stands for Provincial Management Service. Graduates enter it at BS-17 through the Combined Competitive Examination run by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). The syllabus has two parts: fixed compulsory papers everyone sits, and optional papers you pick from seven groups.

Paper timing in past date sheets: General Knowledge and English Essay ran two hours, the other compulsory papers three.
PMS optional subjects (600 marks)
You choose three subjects. Each carries 200 marks across two papers (Paper I and Paper II). You cannot take more than one subject from the same group.

That is 30 subjects in seven groups. Once you submit your application, optional subjects can't be changed, and wrongly filled optional choices lead to rejection.
Choosing well: pick subjects you can write analytically about in three hours, not subjects that merely sound prestigious. Subjects that overlap with your degree usually cost less preparation time.
PMS exam pattern and selection stages

General Knowledge MCQ screening. In the 2024 cycle, PPSC ran a 100-mark MCQ paper first; only those who cleared it moved on to the remaining written papers.

How to prepare from the syllabus
Start with the two English papers and Urdu. They are three of your six compulsory papers, and written-language scoring tends to separate candidates. Build a current-affairs routine early for General Knowledge, since the MCQ screening paper has negative marking. Solve PPSC past papers under timed conditions so the 1,500-word essay and précis formats feel routine.
