LAT Test Preparation 2026: Syllabus, Study Plan and Online Resources

The Law Admission Test (LAT) is required for admission to four-year LLB programmes at HEC- and Pakistan Bar Council-recognised universities and institutions in Pakistan. To prepare well, learn the 100-mark paper pattern first. Give most of your time to English and General Knowledge, practise writing within 200 words, and solve LAT past papers under a timer. The free video lectures and study plan below show you how.

How to Prepare for the LAT Test 2026

  1. Learn the marks split. English and General Knowledge together carry 40 of the 100 marks.
  2. Start with English and GK. They give the biggest return for your time.
  3. Learn from videos, then test yourself. Watch a lecture, then solve questions on that topic.
  4. Solve past papers by subject. Use the subject-wise LAT past papers.
  5. Practise the written part. The essay and personal statement are each capped at 200 words.
  6. Take timed mock tests in the last two weeks. Review every mistake.

Subject-Wise Preparation

English (20 marks)

Focus on synonyms, antonyms and prepositions. Learn about 10 new words a day with a meaning, a synonym and an antonym. Learn prepositions in groups: time (in, on, at), place, and fixed pairs like “depend on” and “interested in”. Our English video lectures cover tenses, prepositions and synonyms. Then test yourself with LAT English past papers.

General Knowledge (20 marks)

Split GK into three notebooks: Pakistan, the world, and everyday science. Cover world capitals and currencies, international organisations such as the UN, OIC and SAARC, geography, and news from the past 12 months. Revise weekly and practise with LAT GK past papers.

Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies (10 marks each)

Both are intermediate-level. Use short summary notes rather than full textbooks. For Pakistan Studies, cover the pre-1947 history including 1857, the Pakistan Movement, the constitutions (1956, 1962, 1973) and basic geography. For Islamic Studies, revise basic beliefs and pillars, the Seerah, the Khulafa-e-Rashideen and major events. Then solve Pakistan Studies past papers and Islamic Studies past papers.

Urdu (10 marks)

The Urdu section tests vocabulary, so practise word meanings, opposites and common idioms. Our Urdu video lectures are mostly grammar, so pair them with Urdu past papers for vocabulary.

Basic Mathematics (5 marks)

Revise arithmetic, fractions, percentages and ratios. Calculators are not allowed, so practise mental maths. Don’t over-invest, because this section is only 5 marks. Use the Maths video lectures and Mathematics past papers.

Essay (15 marks)

Write no more than 200 words in English or Urdu. Use a simple structure:

  • Introduction (30–40 words): state your main point.
  • Causes or reasons (60–70 words): give one clear example.
  • Effects or solutions (60–70 words): be practical.
  • Conclusion (30–40 words): close the idea.

Example outline for “Importance of Education”: introduction (education builds a country) → causes of low literacy → effects on jobs and society → solutions (schools, teachers, awareness) → conclusion. Prep sites report that education, poverty, corruption, population and technology come up often, but that is unconfirmed and not a prediction. Practise three timed essays a week. The essay lectures in the English video table can help.

Personal Statement (10 marks)

This is one first-person statement of up to 200 words, not a list of paragraphs. Cover four things: who you are, why you want to study law, one real experience or challenge, and your goal as a lawyer. Use short, correct sentences. Write from your own experience, because memorised templates may not fit the question you are given.

4-Week LAT Study Plan

Aim for 2–3 hours a day and adjust to your schedule. This is a suggested schedule, not an official one. If you have less time, prioritise English, GK and the written part.

Week Focus Daily routine Weekly target
1 Pattern, English, GK basics 10 words, prepositions, one GK topic Finish English lectures 1–2 and 7–17; start GK notebooks
2 Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies, Urdu, Maths One subject block plus 10 words Complete summary notes; one past paper per subject
3 Past papers and writing 2 subject papers; 1 essay 3 timed essays, 1 personal statement draft, error log started
4 Mocks and revision 1 full timed mock every 2–3 days 2–3 mocks, revise the error log, final essay and statement polish

At about 100 minutes for 75 MCQs, you have roughly 80 seconds per question. Practise at that speed.

Past Papers and MCQ Practice

Solve LAT past papers by subject, then as a full test. Time yourself. For every wrong answer, write the correct answer and why you missed it. Past papers show the style of questions, but each test uses new ones, so don’t just memorise answers.

LAT Preparation Books and PDFs

Guidebooks for the LAT are sold by Pakistani publishers such as Dogar Brothers, Nadeem Book Fort and Caravan Book House. This is not an endorsement. Choose the latest edition and check that it matches the 100-mark pattern above. Free “LAT preparation book PDF” files online may be outdated or shared without permission, so compare any PDF with the current pattern before relying on it. Our free past-paper PDFs are a safe place to start. If you want guided help, see LAT coaching centres and academies.

Test-Day Documents and Rules

  • Bring a printed roll number slip and your original CNIC or passport.
  • If you are under 18, bring your original B-Form or NADRA Juvenile Card, plus your original SSC or HSSC certificate with photo.
  • Mobile phones and electronic devices, including calculators, are not allowed.
  • You cannot change your test centre after submitting your application.
  • Never photograph or share the question paper.

Common Preparation Mistakes

  • Spending too much time on Maths (5 marks) and too little on English and GK (40 marks).
  • Writing essays without a timer, then running out of time on the day.
  • Going over the 200-word limit.
  • Leaving MCQs blank. Pattern guides report no negative marking, so attempt all.
  • Using old notes without checking the current pattern.
