Pakistan Government to set up first comprehensive Digital Urdu Dictionary in the World

Islamabad: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is planning to establish a first ever digital Urdu dictionary in Pakistan. The ministry is taking this step to promote and to preserve the national language of our country. English is the most common medium of communication in government organizations and offices which has decreased our confidence and usage of Urdu.

It is important to mention here that this is going to be the first inclusive digital Urdu dictionary unlike the Urdu Lughat, which has grown along with the time, however is incomplete.

Almost Rs. 208 million will be given for this project. For the first stage of this project, Rs. 10 million would be spent on developing the software along with the association of IT Ministry.

This project of digital Urdu dictionary is expected to be completed till November 2018.

As per the senior official of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the current government is trying its best for the improvement and preservation of Urdu language.

The government has also formulated a comprehensive plan to accomplish the above-mentioned objectives.

Progress on Urdu Fonts

The residents of Pakistan are also trying to promote this cause. In the past new Urdu font was designed by a father-son calligrapher duo. The font entitled as Mehr-e-Nastaleeq was named after the father Nasrullah Mehr who was an award winning calligrapher along with his work being published in newspapers, magazines and books.

This is further highlighted by our requirement of having regimented Internet-ready Urdu fonts which we lack.

Presently we work along with the several different Urdu fonts and none have been standardized for the usage on the Internet.

High quality fonts such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq are too big to be used on the net. This will increase the load time of page and will also eventually result in a poor user experience.
