Is Psychology A Better Career For Girls Than Boys?

Psychology is a study program in which the candidates study human behavior and mental processes by using various perspectives. The student employs scientific methods in order to learn about human perceptions and reactions to certain situations. Psychology is considered an interdisciplinary discipline as it interlinks with many other disciplines that include social sciences, life sciences, and artificial intelligence. Moreover, this study program offers a wide range of career opportunities to the candidates that they can pursue after the completion of the degree. The candidates can take admission in the BS psychology after the intermediate and can also get the higher education in this particular degree program depending upon their interests. The candidates can choose various fields of Psychology such as Clinical Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Sports Psychology, Rehabilitation, and Organization Behavior, School Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, and many others. The male as well as the female students take admission in the Psychology program that has been offered by the various universities of Pakistan.

Psychology As A Career

Almost 80% of students enrolled in the psychology degree program are female and the proportion is even higher so we can say that the psychology professions are female-dominated but it does not mean that the male candidates cannot join this profession. The male students having an interest in this domain can become psychologists after the completion of their degree. The career is not specific to any gender as the male and female candidates both can choose this field. No doubt there is gender imbalance as the female students prefer to opt this field more as compared to male students. But a career in Psychology offers equal opportunities to girls and boys. However, it has been reported that the male students perceive psychology as a degree that is associated with health and education professions/careers and they think that it is suitable for females not for them.

Psychology Degree Program

It is a matter of fact that male psychologists are also important as many people demand to see the male psychologist seek guidance. Male psychology role models should be available for the community who engage with the people and assist them in the mental issues with the proper guidance and medication. So the need of the hour is to promote the wide range of careers that a Psychology degree can lead on for male and female students.

Career Choice: Girls Vs. Boys

Boys choose science mostly fact-based subjects, such as economics, business studies, commerce, and maths, and often perform well in them. After the completion of the intermediate, the female students prefer to join the medical-related fields while the female students tend to choose other fields like engineering. The candidates enrolled in the Psychology degree have the option to choose the subjects according to their interests according to the curriculum provided by the educational institute. Moreover, boys sometimes do not prefer this degree program due to the speculative nature of the topics. The institutes do not promote psychology as a science and classify it as a social science like sociology. Some of the Psychology courses that the candidates have to study are Introduction to Psychological Research, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive psychology, Social psychology, Psychopathology, Personality, and individual differences, Survey research and design in Psychology, Motivation, and Emotion, Experimental Psychology, and many others.
