Position: Chief Safety Officer (CSO)

Role Overview

The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) will serve as the organization’s highest independent authority and strategic leader for Safety, Health, Environment, and Social (HSES) governance.

This executive-level role elevates HSES from a compliance function to a core strategic and governance priority. The CSO will ensure that zero-harm principles, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility are fully embedded across all company operations, projects, and decision-making processes.

The CSO will provide independent assurance to the Managing Director and the Board, operating free from operational pressures and ensuring objective oversight of HSES performance.

Educational Qualifications

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in:

  • Occupational Health & Safety

  • Environmental Science

  • Industrial Engineering

  • Or a related discipline

• Master’s degree preferred in:

  • HSE

  • Environmental Management

  • Engineering

  • Business Administration (MBA)

Professional Certifications (Strongly Preferred)

• NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent)

• CSP (Certified Safety Professional)

• CMIOSH

• CIH

• ISO Lead Auditor (ISO 45001 / ISO 14001)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 15+ years of progressive experience in HSE leadership roles.

• Demonstrated experience managing HSE programs at corporate or enterprise level.

• Proven leadership across multiple sites, regions, or business units.

• Experience in high-risk or regulated industries such as:

  • Energy

  • Manufacturing

  • Construction

  • EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction)

Technical & Leadership Competencies

• Managing serious safety incidents and investigations.

• Handling regulatory enforcement actions and compliance matters.

• Proven track record of:

  • Improving safety performance

  • Strengthening environmental compliance

  • Reducing operational and enterprise risks

• Embedding safety culture and governance best practices across organizations.

Key Objectives of the Role

• Establish and lead enterprise-wide HSES governance framework.

• Provide strategic leadership to ensure zero-harm workplace culture.

• Oversee environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives.

• Integrate social responsibility into corporate strategy and operations.

• Provide independent reporting and assurance to executive leadership and the Board.

• Ensure compliance with national and international safety and environmental standards.
