Urdu Dictionary with huge 22 Volumes to be launched online on May 20th

In the beginning of this year, the Urdu Dictionary Board (UDB) announced that it is working on a huge twenty two volume Urdu dictionary that would be uploaded online free of cost for every person. This project is expected to go online next week.

The Urdu dictionary of commonly known as “Lughat” would have 22 volumes, each comprising of almost 22,000 pages and 264,000 words.

This dictionary would be uploaded at “udb.gov.pk”

Main Features of Urdu Dictionary (Urdu Lughat)

The chief editor of UDB Aqeel Abbas Jafri claims that the dictionary will have 2 main features:

The main “lughat” will be armed along with a search engine, making it enough convenient to find the words. You can also listen to the correct diction of the words.

Urdunama Journal’s 54 volumes would be available as well.

Mr. Jafri furthermore said that there are 1,500 rare Urdu books from as far earlier as 1920, which they are planning to scan as well as upload to a website like “Rekhta”.

Urdu Dictionary goes online on May 20^th, 2017.

The Dictionary Board has set a deadline of May 20^th, 2017 for this project. The complete procedure was duly organized along with the tenders invites floated through a crystal clear procedure.

Afterwards the tenders were submitted, followed by a bidding procedure.

The lowest bid along with the best profile was nominated for the job.

During the first stage of the project, the 22 Urdu dictionary volumes were put together. These were more proofread in the second stage.

The software for the composing as well as proofreading the dictionary checks the entries accurately, which takes time.

Mr. Jafri said that many entries in these volumes were incorrect and needed to be fixed online, which will not be possible for the earlier published works (hard copy).

Given the fame of the Urdu dictionary, it is expected that the management behind UDP website is up to the task of handling the huge traffic.
