BS Statistics is a four-year, eight-semester degree that teaches you how to collect, analyse and interpret data. Under the Higher Education Commission’s revised 2025 curriculum, it carries at least 133 credit hours. HEC’s minimum entry requirement is a 12-year school certificate (HSSC or an IBCC equivalent) in any group, although many universities ask for mathematics or a minimum percentage. Graduates work in banking, health, research, official statistics and data analysis, or continue to an MS or MPhil.
This guide covers what you will study, who can apply, the main routes in, and where to go next. Use the linked pages for current admission notices, universities, fees and merit lists.

Alongside these, you take general education courses such as functional English, quantitative reasoning, Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies. The scheme includes calculus and linear algebra, so you should be comfortable with maths. For the full list, see the BS Statistics syllabus page.
HEC’s curriculum is built around seven electives. If a department draws all seven from one area, the degree can carry a specialization name, for example BS Statistics (Data Science). If the electives come from several areas, the degree is awarded in its general form. HEC’s examples are:
Data Science: statistical machine learning, big data analytics and related topics.
Biostatistics: epidemiology, survival analysis, clinical trials and related topics.
Financial Statistics: financial econometrics, time series forecasting, actuarial statistics and related topics.
Departments can create others. COMSATS Lahore, for instance, lists Applied Statistics and Operations Research alongside Data Science and Biostatistics. Specialization is optional for universities, so check what each one actually offers.
HEC’s minimum is an HSSC or equivalent in any group. In practice, universities set their own conditions:
|
Institution |
Published criteria |
|---|---|
|
University of the Punjab (Institute of Statistics) |
Minimum 45% marks |
|
Government Post-Graduate College Sahiwal |
Intermediate with statistics as an elective, or FSc Pre-Medical/Pre-Engineering or ICS |
|
University of Sialkot |
12 years of education: HSSC, FA, FSc, ICS, I.Com or A-levels, with passing grades |
|
University of Southern Punjab (2.5-year route) |
A BA/BSc graduation with at least a second division |
So FSc and ICS students have the widest choice, but FA and I.Com students may also qualify at some universities. Check each notice, and confirm whether mathematics is required.
HEC’s curriculum describes entry points beyond the standard route:
Associate Degree in Statistics. The first four semesters double as an Associate Degree. Holders can join the fifth semester without extra courses, with a minimum 2.00/4.00 CGPA.
Related associate degree. Holders of an associate degree in a related field need a bridging semester first.
Conventional BSc. Holders of a two-year BSc can join the fifth semester after a bridging semester, with at least 45% cumulative marks. Universities may set higher criteria.
Exit option. Students can leave a BS after four semesters with an Associate Degree if they keep a CGPA of at least 2.0.
Some universities run dedicated bridging programmes. USP’s BS Statistics (2.5 years) is an 86-credit-hour programme over five semesters, including one bridging semester.
Check eligibility against the university’s notice.
Apply by the deadline and pay any application fee.
Sit the test or interview if the university requires one.
Watch the merit lists. Many universities weight intermediate marks heavily, some add matric, and others combine a test with academic marks. Merit lists often come in several rounds.
Confirm your seat by paying the fee and submitting original documents before the deadline.
See BS Statistics admissions for open notices and the BS Statistics merit lists for recent results. Our merit list page currently shows entries for Government College University Lahore (including BS Statistics with Data Science) and the University of Sahiwal, both dated July 2026.
BS Statistics is offered in public and private institutions across the country. Examples from official pages and our directory include:
Punjab: University of the Punjab (Institute of Statistics), GCU Lahore, Bahauddin Zakariya University, University of Sahiwal, University of Okara, University of Southern Punjab, Minhaj University, University of Sialkot, COMSATS Lahore, Government Post-Graduate College Sahiwal.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: University of Malakand, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan.
Sindh: Begum Nusrat Bhutto Women University, Sukkur, which recently introduced the programme.
Distance learning: Allama Iqbal Open University and its regional campuses.
Our universities offering BS Statistics directory has the full list. Before you apply, confirm HEC recognition on the HEC website and check that the programme is currently admitting students.
Fees range widely between public and private institutions, and they change every year. As examples from institutions’ own pages (none shows a year, so verify before budgeting):

HEC’s curriculum describes graduates working in banking and finance, healthcare, technology, insurance and research. USP lists the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the Punjab Development Department, the Agriculture Census Department and the State Bank of Pakistan as typical employers. The curriculum’s Official Statistics course covers national data sources such as PBS and NADRA.
Typical roles include data analyst, statistician, researcher, biostatistician and actuarial analyst. The skills that employers need line up with what the degree teaches: R and Python programming, statistical packages, data wrangling and visualisation, sampling, regression and research methods.
We don’t publish a salary figure here. The numbers circulating online are mostly unsourced, and pay varies by role, employer and city.
Graduates can move to an MS or MPhil. HEC’s curriculum sets a minimum of 32 credit hours for an MPhil in Statistics. A BS Statistics degree is the basic requirement, and the admitting university must also use an admission test with a 50% passing score, or accept GRE or HAT General at 50%. See MPhil Statistics in Pakistan for universities and criteria.
HEC also describes how a BS Statistics graduate can obtain equivalence with a BS Data Science degree for employment and further study, by completing a defined set of data-science credits, a minor, an internship and a capstone. Check the exact requirements before relying on it.
BS Statistics centres on probability, inference, sampling and modelling, with growing emphasis on programming.
BS Mathematics is more abstract and theory-heavy.
BS Economics applies statistical methods to economic questions. See BS Economics and BS Banking and Finance for neighbouring options.
BS Data Science weights computing more heavily. A BS Statistics with a Data Science specialization sits in between.
It is a four-year degree in collecting, analysing and interpreting data, covering probability, inference, sampling, regression and statistical computing.
HEC’s minimum is an HSSC or equivalent in any group. Universities set their own conditions, such as a minimum percentage or a mathematics background, so check each notice.
Four years, over eight regular semesters. HEC’s 2025 curriculum sets at least 133 credit hours and allows up to 144.
Some universities accept them (University of Sialkot lists FA and I.Com), while others require FSc or ICS or statistics as an elective. Check the notice.
The scheme includes Calculus I and II and Linear Algebra, so you should be comfortable with maths.
Roles include data analyst, statistician, researcher, biostatistician and actuarial analyst, in banking, health, research and government bodies.
Yes. HEC lists Data Science as a specialization, and it describes an equivalence route to a BS Data Science degree.
You can do an MS or MPhil in Statistics or a related field. HEC’s MPhil requires at least 32 credit hours and an admission test.
Statistics focuses on data, uncertainty and inference, while mathematics is more theoretical and abstract.
We don’t publish a figure, because available numbers are mostly unsourced and vary widely.
