BZU is a well-established and well known public research university which has been ranked 8th in the General Universities Category by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC). It has marked its position among the 800 most Powerful Universities of the World (Times Higher Education).
It is one of the largest and oldest university of Punjab, established in 1975. Bahauddin Zakariya University was previously called The Multan University, it was renamed in the memory and honor of the great Sufi saint “Hazarat Baha-ud-din Zikariya”. The main campus is conveniently located at Bosan Road west to Mouza Basti Ratta, only 10 km away from the city Centre. Bahauddin Zakariya University was built with the objective of providing higher education and research facilities to the area of southern Punjab, it also targets to cover the Civil Administrative Divisions of Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan.
The initially set up of the university was small with a rented building and only eight functional departments However the university showed remarkable growth and progress. BZU now has a very large (over 1200 acres) purpose built campus in Multan with about sixty departments and many constituent colleges. There are 79 affiliated colleges with the university which also include some of the oldest and most eminent colleges e.g. Government College, Government Emerson College Multan, Government Post Graduate College (Sahiwal), etc.
Hence the university successfully performs the three free functions of affiliation , teaching and examining body.
HEC, PMDC and PEC recognizes and acknowledges all degrees issued by the BZU.
The university provided many facilities and services to its on campus and off campus students. The transport facility of the University consists of 28 buses and 3 coaches that cater to the staff and the students. Residential and hostel facilities are also provided to accommodate students and staff members. The rostrum of faculty consists of experienced and well-qualified staff. There are a total of 619 faculty members out of which 389 hold a doctoral degree. The enrolled student body is around 26659 and a significant number of which is female students. The university has a roster of notable alumni.
It is one the fastest growing university of Pakistan, which continues to contribute significantly to the development of the country.
