The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test used for admissions into various graduate and business school programs worldwide, particularly in the United States. It's administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GRE exam measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. Among popular scholarships, US Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship also demands GRE test scores from applicants.

GRE Test New Format 2024

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced that the Graduate Record Exam (GRE®) has been shortened. In place of the current 4-hour exam, examiners will be given a condensed exam that will take less than two hours to complete, or about half the time. You will find all the information you need about the new GRE format's implementation, scoring, sectional divisions, and effects on students in this article.

Why Shorter GRE Test

  • All of these GRE changes are intended to make it easier for students to sit for the test and send in their scores to colleges.
  • The GRE will be shorter, easier, and less mentally and physically taxing with these changes.

Changes Made In New GRE Test

ETS (Educational Testing Service), the organization that administers the GRE, occasionally makes adjustments to the test format or content. For upcoming GRE tests, ETS has made following changes

  • GRE test time shorter to 1 hour and 58 minutes
  • 10 minutes break time will not be given to candidates
  • Unscored section (analyze an argument) is removed
  • Reduction in number of questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning
  • Result declaration within 8 - 10 days

New GRE Test Timings

The largest change to the GRE in 2023 is the exam's duration. Instead of the previous three hours and forty-five minutes, the shortened GRE will now last one hour and fifty-eight minutes.

GRE Test Structure Changes

  • Elimination of the section "Analyze an argument"
  • In the quantitative sections, there are now only 27 questions instead of 40.
  • There are now only 27 questions instead of 40 in the verbal sections.

Changes In GRE Test Result Declaration

Results of the recently updated GRE exam are released in 8–10 days as opposed to the previous 10–15 days.

What Is Still Same In GRE Test

Though it is shorter, the new GRE is nearly identical to the previous one. The content of the GRE won't change in any manner. The shortened GRE will undoubtedly evaluate your critical thinking, analytical writing, and verbal and quantitative reasoning skills in order to determine how well-prepared you are for graduate school. The old and shortened versions of the GRE are identical in terms of test-taking procedures, expenses, and preparation.
