It is the internationally recognized qualification and a comprehensive capacity relative to Cambridge IGCSE and the UK GCSE. It is an alternate to matriculation in Pakistan.
There are 5 compulsory subjects at O level which are English Language, Mathematics, Pakistan Studies, Urdu Language and Islamic studies. Apart from these subjects, students can opt for several other subjects but the minimum requirement for higher studies is 3 subjects. This also lets students to ensure better grades rather than dividing effort to several subjects.
Statement of Results is not a certificate issued by GCSE. It is just a copy to announce results that is sent to the home address or respective schools 6 weeks after examination held. It cannot be changed except the Cambridge University itself.
Certificate indicates the confirmation of the grades and results. It is issued after Statements of Results.
EAR stands for “enquiry about results”. If a candidate is unsatisfied by the grades awarded to him/her, then a re-mark can be requested. This is called EAR. Candidates need to download EAR form online and request a re-check before the deadlines announced.
A CIE portal name and password is given to all private candidates to check their results online. Regular Candidates do not have access to this normally. If a student has not received the portal access information then it is advised you to write to British Council at

‘U’ grade stands for ungraded and it refers to the fact that a candidate has failed to meet the requirements for a pass and the performance in examination is extremely poor. It is mentioned on the Statement of Results but not on Certificate.
Many schools cover the course in 2 years while other schools complete it in 3 years. This varies from school to school. Candidates can appear for the examination whenever they are ready and prepared for it though approximately 130 guided learning hours are required for O level.
CIE has now classified countries into zones and a different paper is set for every zone. Pakistan lies in administrative zone 4 of CIE.
There are 2-4 papers per subject varying from MCQ’s to comprehensive knowledge testing papers. There are no practical examinations but there is a paper called Alternative to Practical for science subjects to test the practical knowledge. Computer Studies students have to submit a full project demonstrating their skills in the subjects.
No result indicates that the board has stopped the result due to some issue or result cannot be issued due to candidate missing the examination.
