Lahore: On Monday, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) won the 22nd Government College University (GCU) Parliamentary Style Debates 2017 arranged by the debating society of GCU, Lahore.
This year, 180 debaters from 61 educational institutes challenged for the trophies at the 4-day long multilingual tournament, organized at the Bukhari Auditorium of university from March 24th, 2017 to March 27th, 2017.

This year, the main final topic of the debate was ‘The right of nationality to Afghan children born in Pakistan’.
In Urdu category, the University of Engineering and Technology beat Kinnaird College in the final round and lifted the team trophy.
Muhammad Afzaan Munir of University of engineering and Technology was announced the best Urdu speaker.

On the other hand, LUMS was declared as the best English team and awarded the ‘Prof Khalid Aftab Trophy’.
At individual level, LUMS debater Hafiz Usman Tanver clinched the ‘Syed Muhammad Ali Abbas Shield’ for best English narrator.
In the under-19 English debates, the trophy was lifted by Beaconhouse School System, Defence.

While addressing the prize distribution ceremony, president of Government College University Debating Society Raza Aftab Gillani said this contest was first organized in 1995 and since then had been a regular feature every year.
Dr Ammar Ali Jan, a well-known orator, social activist as well as a graduate of Cambridge University, was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony.
