The Conference was organized by Latif Ebrahim Jamal (LEJ) National Science Information Centre, University of Karachi on Wednesday, and was attended by notable professors, scientists and a large number of students belonging to Courses and progrmmes of Since and IT. The press was also invited.

The Director of International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi said during the press conference, ‘"Pakistan is running out of fresh water, and approaching towards drastic famine as irrigation lands are being reduced due to shortage of fresh water, urbanisation, salinity and deforestation. Malnutrition has caused reduction in average height of Pakistanis. This demands urgent adaptation of modern agriculture technologies. The per capita water availability in Pakistan at present is around 865 cubic meters which is likely to go down to 850 cubic meters in 2025.

Global food insecurity is the leading threat in the developing world. Strong political commitment to eliminate hunger is essential. Globally biotech crops have contributed to food security, sustainability and climate change by increasing crop productivity and helping alleviate poverty through uplifting the livelihood of farmers and agriculture related workforce.’

The main purpose of organizing this conference was to raise awareness about the benefits that could be derived from filed of Biotechnology which can also stabilize the economy of Pakistan if iot being commercialized. During the conference the present condition of Pakistan’s education system was discussed thoroughly.

Prof Dr M Iqbal Choudhary, gave reference of a report presented by the United Nations, concluding that Pakistan is a society where education of children is ignored. The factors of hunger and poverty prevailing in Pakistan were also chief topics of discussion. It was briefed that ever day 22 newborn children die. The neonatal mortality in Pakistan is worst.

All the speakers at the conference of the view that the government should play more aggressive role in eliminating problem of hunger and weak education system in order to make Pakistan progress. Though Pakistan has a great potential of advancement in every field, but it not utilized and no concrete steps are implemented. The conference was a source of enhancing education and awareness for the attending students of University of Karachi.

A Walk to Promote ‘Green and Clean Pakistan’ Being Held By Allama Iqbal Open University

The students and teachers of Allama Iqbal Open University held a walk on Wednesday, in Islamabad. The aim of this walk was to promote PM Imran Khan’s program of “Green and Clean Pakistan”. The students were holding banners and placards, on which statements creating awareness regarding cleanliness and its necessity for Pakistan was written.

The Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University was leading the teachers and students during the walk. While talking with the media, he said, ‘Being a Muslim, cleanliness is an integral part of our religious obligation which ensures a healthy environment in the society, in order to make Pakistan clean and green is the prime responsibility of every individual’.
