Mujahid Kamran Former VC of Punjab University Arrested

The Pakistani educational system is going through the worst of times. The arrest of Former VC is advancement in investigations against corruption made in Universities.

After Axact probe and Sargodha University VC and official’s arrest, the former VC of Punjab University has been arrested prior to charges of corruption and irregularities. The Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar had took notice of the criminal activities in the Universities and later handed over the further investigation to NAB.

The arrest took place when Mujahid Kamran came to record his statement in the court. He was arrested by NAB on Thursday in Lahore. Five other former officials of Punjab University were arrested.

He was arrested on behalf of illegal appointments, and nepotism happened in his period as VC. He had appeared before NAB Headquarter in Thokar Niaz Baig to record his statement, the meeting lasted for four consecutive hours, but Mr mujahid was unable to satisfy the interrogators and hence was taken into custody. He was alleged to make 550 illegal appointments in Punjab University including his wife Dr Shazia Qureshi as principal of Punjab University Lahore College.

The other five arrested are recognized as PU registrars Dr Orangzaib Alimgir, Dr Liaquat Ali, Dr Kamran Zahid, Dr Raas Masud and Ameen Athar. He had also done violation in PPRA rules and facilitated his favorite students with scholarships. Nab will present the former VC in accountability court to acquire physical remand of him and five others. According to statement made by Nab sources, “All the accused will be presented before accountability court on Friday, where the NAB will request for their physical remand.

” NAB spokesperson Muhammad Zeeshan announced the arrests to the media. He informed the media about ongoing investigations and that more arrests are likely to happen as it is a huge fraudulent case. The former VC is found responsible for illegal appointments in large scale, his method was to award one year contract first then he kept on increasing its duration. However, the NAB spokesman, refused to reveal more details about the case as the investigations are still in process.

It all started with a daylong protest held by students of University of Sargodha at Canal Road Lahore. The students put forward their stance by stating that the University officials have taken huge amount fees from them and have not conducted any examinations and no degrees have been awarded to them. Their future is in stake and urged the government to take notice of their problem.

The Chief Justice of Punjab tak ing a notice about this matter called for submission of all important details to be presented in court. As the case investigations advanced, former VC and six other officials of University of Sargodha arrested.

Punjab University is not only highly recognized in Pakistan, but worldwide too. Such corruption charges are definitely matter of shame for Pakistan and reputation of the University. The eradication of corruption from Universities’ administration might lead Pakistan to a non-corrupted education system.
