Allama Iqbal Open University, AIOU Offers Jail Inmates The Free Education

Allama Iqbal Open University, AIOU has been working to offer free education to jail inmates since 1990. However, it is the only public sector university of the country, Pakistan which is doing such an activity. It has seen that the prisoners are offering education from matric to bachelor standard.

What Policy Made For Prisoners Education

In 2016, the official of the university had arranged a new policy according to which they tried to make the education system for prisoners more evident and helpful. However, the existing educational facilities are not only going to upgrade but at the same time, the education system for the jails of throughout the country will also have become possible.

The Aim Behind This Step

There is the only aim behind this effort is to make the prisoners educated and responsible or useful citizens. The education system will be the way to bend the mind of prisoners from bad to good. The upgraded plan is going to be implemented in collaboration with jail authorities, Wafaqi Mohtasib, and Higher Education Commission, HEC. 

The Role Of Vice Chancellor

However, to make these implementations possible, the vice-chancellor of the university has also wrote a letter to the inspector general of all the jails to be supportive and cooperative in this matter and to make these steps possible. However, it has also seen that the positive response has received from them. 

Moreover, the officials said that the vice-chancellor by itself visited the jails of Rawalpindi, Quetta, and Karachi and met with the prisoners and talk about this step taking towards them to make them educated and distribution of books for libraries has also become possible during this visit. 

How To Get Admission Forms

The university is offering AIOU admission forms free of cost to the interested or willing candidates. Moreover, they are not asked about AIOU registration fees, AIOU tuition fees, and any other charges until the duration of their imprisonment and they will be offered a degree without any cost. Furthermore, the officials also said that they are going to construct the play classrooms for the children who are living with their mothers and are away from the educational activities; however, for this purpose, the officials are getting permission from jail authorities.
