Islamabad: Physically handicapped as well as visually/hearing impaired students will continue to get free education from Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), along with the improved facilities including facility of study material through computerized accessibility network.

The vice chancellor of AIOU Dr Shahid Siddiqui while heading a meeting of academic heads said, the number of disabled students, registered with AIOU has recently reached to almost 400, and it is expected that more students will benefit from the educational facilities which are available from Matric to PhD level.

The meeting also reviewed the procedure of ongoing admission (Spring-2017) which will continue till March 6th, 2017 and the matter of fee concession to poor section of the society.

In the recent ongoing spring admissions, a large number of special students mostly visually impaired have shown interest even in MPhil and MSc programmes.

Those students are provided help for writing in exams. They are also allowed to attempt their exam through Braille.

As per the VC of university, Assistant Professor of Special Education Department, even a bed-ridden such students are also permitted to attend their classes sitting at home, via video-conferencing.
