AIOU enrolls more than 1000 prisoners

Islamabad: More than 1,000 prisoners have registered themselves along with Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) to continue their future study for having a reputable life in the society after completing their imprisonment.

Recently, the varsity upgraded its present facilities in jails across the country providing free education to prisoners, as a part of its effort of taking care of demoted sections of the society.

The education from Matric to BA had been made free for all the prisoners.

The procedure of getting admissions has been simplified. The prospectus as well as the others allied material were sent to the management of jails free of cost, permitting the prisoners to get admission in the present semester for which admissions are open until September 28th, 2017.

The University has worked out a detailed process for holding tutorial meetings, workshops as well as exams within the premises of jail. In order to increase the number of registrations among prisoners, the vice chancellor of university Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui himself visited the jails in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta as well as Rawalpindi and held the discussion along with the authorities of jails on the routine matters.

He also wrote letters to the Inspectors General, Prisons of the 4 provinces asking for their support to implement to accomplish the wanted results. In the letter he asked the IGs Prisoners to circulate the information to all the jails of their provinces to inspire the prisoners to get free education for their better future and become responsible Pakistani residents.

Dr. Shahid Siddiqui while heading a meeting that reviewed the educational strategy for the prisoners said that Allama Iqbal Open University being the government sector educational institutes will fulfill its responsibility towards the society.
