Food Department of India was established in 2nd World War during 1945 to cover the food deficiency at that time. Later it was given name of Civil Supplies Department; its main function was to work for providing complete food supplies required in Punjab region. Punjab Food Authority functions Procurement of wheat for issuance to the mills, To act as government agent to provide a wheat purchase window to the farmers at support price, Ensure Food Security in wheat and wheat products, Transportation from surplus to deficit regions, Protection of wheat from pest and other hazards, Targeted Food Support Programmes and Ramzan/Christmas Packages, Undertaking all activity related to export of wheat up to supply at port, Co-ordination with MOF, MOC, MNFSR, other provinces and International Agencies for matters relating to wheat. Punjab Food Authority also keeps check and balance on quality of food being sold in markets and hotels all over Punjab. It has authority to ban any hotel and restaurant whose quality does not meet standards set by Punjab Govt for food. It ensures the services of Anti Adulteration, Food Security, Market Stabilization and Protection of Growers’ Rights in Province of Punjab. This departments has set its rules and regulations under Punjab Food Authority Act, 2011, Punjab Foodstuffs (Control) Act, 1958 and Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950.
