Face masks are the native essentials for any in Pakistan over the threat of coronavirus spreads. But with a population of 200 million people appropriate equipment for safety isn't affordable for everyone. In poor neighborhoods and markets of the capital, masks come in different colors and materials sold for one cent each.

Ehtisham Kiyani a homemade mask vendor makes masks and sells them to earn livelihood for his family.  The masks sold around the markets are not medically approved and are cheap and they are not sterile. The locals told the news reporters that they buy these poor, cheap and no effective face masks just to avoid police arrest otherwise we won’t buy them due to their poor quality.

Sanaullah Abbasi, police inspector of KPK said ” Corona situation was the new phenomena, it was new to the police itself. With this corona we are facing the conventional crimes also, meaning that by that we have two challenges, number one is the conventional crimes and the other is this corona challenge. For the violation of SOPs we oxalate the law and so many people were arrested .

But in slums outside Islamabad, having a face mask to combat the virus is a luxury. Families in the slum areas barely have the basic needs. Doctors say homemade masks are not effective in preventing the disease from spreading. That is on top of the hospital feeling the strain that they run out of bed and ventilators for effective patients. Medical staff working without surgical masks have also threatened to strike this week.

“Healthcare staff don’t have the enough protective kits given by the government. On the other hand there is a wrong policy of easing the lockdown without the awareness campaign. People are now using unhygienic homemade masks which is a main reason for spreading the coronavirus case across the country” said DR. Afal Rabi the young doctor’s association in charge.

Infectious numbers have grown since the markets reopened. The government has rejected imposing a tough lockdown because of economic loss and unemployment.

More than 100 thousand people have tested positive of coronavirus and the medical experts warn that the next two weeks will be critical for Pakistan. Most of the pakistani people cannot afford to buy quality face-covers, so some are making their own masks or resorting to buy cheap versions of face masks, which do not provide the level of protection they need.
