UoP students protest against increase in fee

The aspirants representing the various federations as well as the societies on Wednesday did a protest as well as sit-in to press the management of the University of Peshawar (UoP) to accept their claims.

The protesting aspirants get together at the Pearl Lawn of the campus to do the protest. They were commanded by the president of campus People’s Students Federation Riaz Yousafzai and leaders of other federations as well as the leaders of society.

After passing through the various paths, they reached the main square in the university just near to the Law College and blocked it for some time. From there they began a protest parade towards the administration block where they showed a sit-in. The sit-in started at 12 o’clock afternoon and continued till late in the night.

The protesting aspirants were of the opinion that the management of the university has improved the admission as well as the other charges by 40 %, which were intolerable for the large number of aspirant’s.

Riaz Yousafzai said that “the children of the university teachers as well as the management officers are getting education without any fee and they are less anxious regarding the burden on the poor aspirants. After the heavy increase in the fees, it was impossible for the aspirant’s to continue their studies”.

Moreover, he convicted the abolishment of the evening classes in the university because of which thousands of aspirants missed the chance to get the admissions. The aspirants also demanded the changes in the semester system and eradication of flaws in exams system. They wanted the facility of scholarship for the aspirants of Chitral, Malakand division as well as of the tribal regions as proclaimed by the PM of Pakistan.

Late in the evening, the Vice Chancellor of the university Dr Rasul Jan called the allocation of the protesting aspirants for talks. The talks continued till late in the night and were at last resulted in wraparound of the sit-in.

The university management agreed to make a six-member committee consisting of the three members each from the aspirants as well as the university officials to review the fees. The committee will submit its endorsements within one week.
