Second Convocation Ceremony of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Held

On Monday, the second convocation ceremony of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) being held at a local hotel. A sum of 530 graduates belonging to medical, allied health sciences and business management courses and programmes were awarded with degrees, out of which 15 students’s received gold medals for their extra ordinary performance. Sindh Mines and Minerals Minister Mir Shabbir Ali Bijarani was chief guest of the ceremony.

While addressing the graduates and attendants of the ceremony, the minister said,’ Health is the ground for all economic and social activities. A healthy individual is an asset for his or her country. Without health, a person’s capability to contribute to society is diminished or finished, if the health issues of individuals are left untreated, they soon turn into a national crisis’. He also added that the government of Sindh is paying keen interest in develpoing and updating the existing Health care system of Sindh and for this purpose efficient medical graduates can contribute a lot.

The VC of the University while his address alluded,’ the new institutes and programmes require classrooms, training facilities and administrative offices. Sindh government has allotted us 20 acres of land in the Education City which is a project for the future, I also humbly request you to transfer the building of the government medical college in Korangi to JSMU so a boys’ medical college can be started.’

The VC further requested the Sindh government to allow public Universities hire experienced teachers above 60 years of age so that they can take benefit from their experience and skills, he said that the private sector is allowed to hire teachers above 70 years of age and this exception has benefited the sector highly in its progress. JSMU is Pakistan’s second largest medical research University.

The degrees awarded by Jinnah Sindh Medical University are affiliated with Higher Education Commission and the University Grants Commission (Pakistan). The chief guest of the ceremony commended the efforts and contribution of JSMU in eliminating lack of medical graduates in Sindh, Thar and Nagarpur areas. The Chief guest shared with the graduates saying,’ Sindh government is also aimed at creating employment and job opportunities for thousands of uneducated youth so that they could join the workforce’.

The notable alumni of JSMU include: Shahid Masood, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Arbab Ghulam Rahim (Former Chief Minister Sindh), Imran Farooq (Pakistani politician), Farooq Sattar (Pakistani politician), Shaista Wahidi (TV personality in Pakistan) and Asim Shahmalak (British hair transplant surgeon and broadcaster). The Jinnah Sindh Medical University was previously known as Sindh medical College until 2010. The admissions of students are done under strict eligibility criterion.

The University has departments of Pathology, Bio Chemistry, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, Physiology, Anatomy and PDC. Although, JSMU has gained status of a University in 2012 but it has achieved a high mark in Pakistan’s educational sector. The University is accommodating a large number of students belonging from various districts of Sindh and the expansion of its building is under consideration of Sindh Government.
