Punjab University officials have announced that the summer holidays will see all 27 university hostels being cleared of students. It was announced by the ministry that hostels are due to remain closed from June 6 to August 27.
A health advisory has been released as parts of Karachi struggle with severe heat.
The university has put in place new rules this year, saying only international students may remain in the hostels during the summer break. Those students in their last semester who are finishing their work must get formal consent from the university to still live on campus. Similarly, departments planning to carry on their activities during the summer should ask for permission if students need to be housed.
Some years ago, students could make their own decision to stay in the hostels during the summer months. The new policy is designed to see that all hostels are evacuated, aside from those given special permission to remain, presumably to make upkeep and safety easier.
All students have been urged by the university management to follow the new measures and make sure they can find alternative accommodation during the summer when the university is closed.
