Lahore: The Punjab government has planned to establish new medical universities in Multan and Rawalpindi as part of efforts to strengthen medical education, healthcare research, and professional training facilities in the province. The initiative aims to provide better opportunities for medical students and improve the overall healthcare system.

According to reports, the provincial health department discussed the establishment of separate medical universities in South Punjab and northern Punjab. Multan and Rawalpindi were identified as suitable locations for these institutions due to their existing medical infrastructure and large number of students seeking medical education.

The proposed universities are expected to enhance medical research activities, provide advanced training facilities, and create more opportunities for students in the field of medicine. The plan focuses on transforming existing medical colleges into advanced academic institutions with stronger research and teaching capabilities.

Officials highlighted that modern medical universities can help improve access to international research resources, advanced libraries, and funding opportunities. The initiative is also aimed at promoting research culture among medical professionals and improving the quality of healthcare education in Punjab.

Multan already has a strong medical education network, while Rawalpindi is considered an important healthcare hub due to its population and existing medical institutions. The establishment of new universities in these cities is expected to benefit students from surrounding districts who currently travel to other cities for higher medical education.

The Punjab government has previously expanded the medical education sector by upgrading and developing healthcare institutions across the province. Existing medical universities, including Nishtar Medical University and Rawalpindi Medical University, are already playing a key role in medical education and training.

Health experts believe that increasing the number of medical universities will help address the growing demand for qualified doctors, specialists, and healthcare professionals. They also emphasized the importance of focusing on research, innovation, and modern teaching methods alongside infrastructure development.

The proposed medical universities are part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to improve specialized healthcare and medical education facilities. The department has also been working on various healthcare projects, including the expansion of tertiary care facilities and improvement of medical services in different regions of Punjab.

The final approval, budget allocation, and implementation timeline for the new medical universities will be decided by the relevant authorities after completing necessary procedures.
