A significant development is underway in the educational landscape of Punjab Province as the Higher Education Department initiates work on one board policy. However, in a transformative move, the Punjab Higher Education Commission has proposed the idea of a single central board for Punjab. This centralized board will assume responsibility for registering and administrating SSC and HSSC board exams throughout the province. Currently, the province has a total of nine educational boards. This strategic shift aims to ease and standardize the overall examination process. However, employee unions of the Punjab boards are not happy with this decision.


PHEC One Board Policy 2024

According to this one board policy of Punjab Higher Education Commission, all 9 educational boards of Punjab will be merged and there will be only one central board in whole Punjab and all other board will come under this one central board. The idea is proposed because they think that there will be ease in decision-making due to having one board. It was also said that, either the Lahore board or Multan board will become the central board of Punjab. The head of this central board will be a 20th or 21st grade officer which will have the authority over all other boards.


Official’s Response on this Decision

The Punjab Higher Education Commission has proposed this idea to simplify the decision-making and examination procedures by consolidating all educational boards in Punjab into one central entity. However, this idea has faced opposition from employee unions representing the existing boards. Official argue that such a move would undermine the autonomy of individual boards and have decided to resist it at every level. This debate underscores the significant challenges and differing perspectives involved in restructuring the education system in Punjab.


Pros & Cons of PHEC One Board Policy

Combining all educational boards of Punjab province into a single central board has both advantages and disadvantages:

  • A single central board may prioritize the interests of urban or more influential cities over those of rural or countryside areas, worsening the educational inequalities.
