The Ministry has issued notice that from August this year, the Single National Curriculum Books would be followed and taught to students of Primary. The Managing Director Punjab Textbook Board, stated that this would be effective to students from primary to grade 5. It was also revealed that there are 30 model books which are being issued, which would be followed in 5 classes. Furthermore, the printing process is going to be tedious and there are 13 Crore books which are going to be printed. It is said that the books would be available to the students before the commencement of the upcoming academic year. The schools would have to make major changes in their lesson plans and past papers would be deemed useless.
On the direction of Shafqat Mehmood, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training issued a notification to all provincial and area governments in regards to the Single National Curriculum’s text book policy. According to the policy, private publishes can develop these books, as long as they are in line with the Student Learning Objectives set by the government. In order to do this, they the private publishers would require an NOC which is issued by the provincial text book board. The board would make sure that there are no controversial subjects discussed within the textbooks as well.
The Future of the Single National Curriculum
The Prime Minister claims to have made such reforms to ensure uniformity in the education system. Furthermore the ministry plans to ensure release textbooks for classes 6th-8th in the upcoming years. This is a drastic step taken by the government however, a majority of the populace in unhappy with this decision, as the timing and the execution was poor. Many business and schools would be affected by this decision and some publishers would have to face huge losses.
