Muzaffarabad: The students of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Medical College Muzaffarabad staged a protest on Thursday, a day after a severe clash with the police.

Though, after holding meetings along with the top representatives of management assured them that their demands will met, the protesters disappeared peacefully.

At almost 10am, the students gathered outside the press club, where they chanted slogans against the police as well as district management for “unleashing a reign of terror on them without any reason”.

On Wednesday, some students and policemen were injured in a clash between the two sides outside the main entrance of the medical university, located in the upscale Jalalabad neighbourhood. Police had under arrest the convicts and registered cases against over 50 aspirants.

However, Chief Secretary Sikandar Sultan Raja got involved in the situation, forming a committee together with Additional Chief Secretary-General (ACS-G) Dr Syed Asif Hussain to solve the issue. On his instructions, all arrested students were released at sehri time, at around 2:00 am.

Speaking to the press, in the presence of lawyers, trade leaders as well as in presence of political personalities, the students demanded that their examination system issue be resolved, and a judicial inquiry be conducted to come across the causes and persons responsible for bringing the situation to this point.

A student leader dressed in bloodstains coveralls, along with bandages around his forehead demanded, “What we have suffered the other day is recorded in the history of educational institutions in AJK. We need justice. It must involve the settlement of our matter as well as punishment to the people who are responsible for the mess that was created yesterday”.

Almost 5 other aspirants were also wearing bandages around their wounds.

Afterwards, the protesters spread mats on a roadway just crosswise the press club and sat there till afternoon. Meanwhile, their representatives called on the chief secretary who supported and assured them that their demand for the makeup of a judicial commission will be accepted.

Alongside, the ACS-G also guaranteed the aspirants that their main problem about the improvements in the examination system would be settled within a week. Action will also be taken against those who are responsible for Wednesday’s incident, he added, following which the strike was called off.
