Lahore: The Government College University celebrated 154 years of its foundations on Jan 1, 2018 with all of its glory and proud. Celebrations were organized in presence of Vice Chancellor GCU Dr. Hassan Amir Shah and with all senior faculty members.
GCU is considered to be one of the prominent institute of Pakistan where thousands of young minds start their journey to excellence every year.
Blast from Past
It was founded on Jan 1, 1864, in the Haveli of Raja Dhyan Singh in the Walled City as liberal arts and Science College.
The grandiose building of the university was completed in 1877 on 3,700 sq ft in the ‘Soldiers Garden’. The building was cost of Rs 320,000/-.
Strength of Students
First batch who graduated from GCU first year consisted of 9 students. Mr Sanjhi Mall was one of those students. Starting from 9 students in hands, GCU has come so far. Now it has more than 12,000 students and offers graduate and postgraduate programs in about 37 disciplines.
Societies-pride of GCU
Blood Donor Society, Debating Society and Ravian Health and sport society are one of the the 21 societies at university level in GCU. Government University Debating Society is one of the oldest societies of university which kicked off in year of 1886-1887.
There are other 29 societies in GCU at departmental level i-e. Business Accounting and Finance Society, Garrett Geography Society, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP). All these societies work as amazing platforms for young students to channelize their energy apart from studies and explore their hidden talents.

Poets and writers: Poet of the East Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, N.M. Rashid, Patras Bukhari, Ashfaq Ahmad, Bano Qudsia;
