The Senate Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) held a meeting at Parliament House. The meeting was headed by Senator Sardar Yaqoob Khan, he heard briefings from Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC), Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) and National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA). The committee recommended establishment of a livestock University for Baluchistan region.

Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) is statutory body, it has responsibility to issue licenses to veterinary doctors and veterinary studies institutes in the country. PVMC told the committee 2,667 veterinary doctors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 916 in Baluchistan.

Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS) based in Uthal, Lasbela District, Baluchistan, is a livestock University in Baluchistan. It is an only livestock University in Baluchistan. It was established in 2005.However, there is need to establish another University in the region.

Livestock and agriculture is an important part of economy of Baluchistan. The government of Baluchistan has been taking measures to improve growth of agricultural sector of Baluchistan since 1891.By definition, “Livestock are domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool. The term is sometimes used to refer solely to those that are bred for consumption, while other times it refers only to farmed ruminants, such as cattle and goats.”

For development of agricultural sector, the need for introducing research on the field is very important. All the developed countries use special technologies and conduct research programmes in Universities to formulate farmer’s friendly policies and help the agricultural sector grow, as a result it benefits the economy in large way.

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan is also paying keen interest in indulging Pakistani Universities in exchange-programmes nationally and internationally. Students belonging to agricultural sciences have also been awarded with scholarships to study abroad in research progrmmes and courses related to the field of agriculture. Pakistan is regarded as agricultural country, with 21% of its GDP coming from agriculture.

About 43% of Pakistan’s total population is employed through agricultural field. In Baluchistan, this field is flourishing slowly. Therefore, establishment of a new livestock University in the region will play a huge rule for its progress. There are almost 39,715 persons involved to field of agriculture in Baluchistan.
