Mardan: A journalism student was killed at Abdul Wali Khan University (AWKU), Mardan in daylight on Thursday after being blamed for blasphemy.

The deceased was recognized as Mashal Khan, an inhabitant of Swabi and the student of Journalism and Mass Communication department at Abdul Wali Khan University.

A friend of the dead student told the media sources that a gang attacked him before shooting him in his head as well as in chest.

He furthermore said that the gang then continued to beat his body along with the sticks.

Afterwards, the students started protesting at the campus and closed it.

A police contingent that arrived at the scene instantly took custody of the dead body; however the aspirants kept demanding it back.

The DSP of Mardan, Sheikh Maltun Mardan Haider Khan confirmed to the media sources that the victim had been murdered by his fellow beings.

He further added that 5 aspirants have been injured during this clash however the police managed to take the situation under control.

Afterwards, K-P IG Salahuddin Mehsud told the media that the arrests have been made and an investigation in this regard is already started. He furthermore said that the further arrests will be made after the police identify the other members of the gang.


“Blasphemy is not known yet,” said IG Mehsud.


A notification issued by the police officials affirmed that 59 people were arrested from the University for their Alleged Involvement in the murder.

The dead body of the victim has been shifted to District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem.

After the incident, the assistant registrar of Abdul Wali Khan University issued a notification stating that the varsity will be closed until further orders.

After the incident ten students have been arrested from the university said local police Chief Mohammad Alam Shinwari.

“After the severe torture that lead his death, the culprits then wanted to burn his dead body”, said Shinwari.
