2,478 foreign medical graduates appears in qualifying exam

Islamabad: Almost 2,478 medical graduates holding degrees from the foreign universities sat the National Examination Board (NEB) qualify exams on Thursday.

This qualifying exam was conducted by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in association along with the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS).

The NEB exam was introduced due to the complaints that medical graduates who studied in languages except English faced the issues in treating patients.

Furthermore, there were also complaints regarding the quality of their medical education.

Earlier, in 2012 via an Act of parliament it was made necessary for foreign graduates to pass the NEB test before being permitted to practice in Pakistan.

Though, the Diploma of American Board, FRCS (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualifications are exempt from the exam.

During the last 4 years, many times the foreign graduates held protests and blamed the PMDC for corruption and favoritism in NEB exams.

The registrar of Pakistan Medical and Dental council Dr Syed Azhar Ali Shah said that the NEB exam was conducted at two centres on Thursday: Islamabad & Rawalpindi.

Approximately 701 applicants appeared in the test conducted at the Army Medical College Rawalpindi while 17, 77 candidates appeared in the test conducted at Pak-China Friendship Centre Islamabad.

The result of this qualifying test will be announced on March 24^th, 2017 on the official websites of NUMS and PMDC.

The registrar of PMDC said a NEB committee, PMDC members as well as the representatives from the Ministry of National Health Services were invited to supervise the exam.

The president of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Prof Shabbir Lehri said transparency as well as unbiased environment in the test was the top most priority of the council.

He also added that all possible measures had been taken in consultation along with all the participants in this regard.
