King Edward medical university is a renowned Medical university of Pakistan. Initiated in 1860, the institution has a long and glorious historical background of 140 years and since its advent, this institute remains committed to provide high academic standards in health and relevant sciences. The institute has a very high standard for admission as more than 90% marks are required in order to get admission in MBBS program at KEMU.
This leading national institution was originated as Lahore medical school in1860. Dr. J. B. Scriven was the first principal of this school. It was the second medical school after the Calcutta medical school, was the first medical institute in subcontinent. The KEMU is named after King Edward VII.
Pakistan’s best surgeons, physician and medical scientist are graduated from KEMU. The university is rendering courses in almost every genre of health sciences as well as degree programs are also offered in basic and allied sciences. The University offers BSc (Hons.) courses in 15 disciplines of Allied Health Sciences. The university also trains FCPS students, and successfully running its PhD, M. Phil, MD, MS and MDS programs. The institution is also conducting comprehensive courses in dental and oral health via their BDS and MDS programs .The institute has also designed a state-of-the- art Doctor of Physiotherapy program for students who want to pursue their career as a physiotherapist.
Many masters and doctorial level programs are also conducted at KEMU as postgraduate diploma and degree courses in various disciplines. The students and graduates of the institution are known as KEMCOLIANS.
The school was primarily set up in artillery barracks at the present site of Government College University Lahore, with an attached dispensary. The dispensary was located in a stable, mile away from the institute. In 1870 the college was affiliated with the newly built Mayo, Hospital. The first building of the school was completed in 1883 and it was renamed as Lahore Medical College in 1886. The first MBBS degree was awarded in 1891. The college was officially affiliated with the Punjab University in 1906.
Lahore Medical College was rechristened as King Edward Medical College in December 1911. The college received donations from many princely states for expansion different block of the college were therefore named after these states such as, Bahawalpur Block, Farid Kot Block and Kapurthala Block and Patiala Block. Lt. Col. Ilahe Bukhsh became the first Pakistani Principal of the College. The college was upgraded to a degree-awarding Medical University in January 2006. Mayo Hospital, Lahore, is the major teaching hospital affiliated the University.
The infrastructure and facilities are most up to date .Different blocks have spacious classrooms and laboratories .Curricular as well as extra- curricular activities are conducted regularly at the institute. Students are registered in various societies which include:King Edward Literary Society Urdu "KELS URDU", Kemcolians Arts & Photography Society (KAPS),International Federation of Medical Students' Associations - Pakistan KEMU LC (IFMSA-Pakistan KEMU LC) and Kemcolians Sports Club etc.The members of these societies and have won numerous national and international competitions. King Edward Medical University publishes a Magazine, KEMCOL, which is completely maintained by the students. The Library is situated at Main Patiala Block of King Edward Medical University. The Main library hall is a historic Hall of the city it contains students Reading Room Above college canteen which have two separate section for Boys & Girls. More than 50279 books are present in the library. The institute also give access to a digital library.
