Key growth imperatives for women education succeed best when specialized mentors share their knowledge, skills, experiences and insights with young females of the nation .To nurture such an idea first women university was established in Pakistan at Mall Road Rawalpindi, Punjab, in 1998.Fatima Jinnah Women University or FJWU is a public university ranked at number 18 in Higher Education Commission of Pakistan rankings. The university enrolled students from Baluchistan, Southern Punjab and Sindh.
The University is fully- funded by Punjab Government. Classes at FJWU were initiated on December 28, 1998 whereas the first batch of students graduated in September 2001. During 1998 - 2008, more than 4362 students have been awarded degrees from this prestigious women institution. Since 1998, the University is functioning to deliver higher education management, and offering international standard courses. Furthermore, global female institutions have collaborated with FJWU to develop exchange programs in fine fettle terms.
Two Sikh brothers, Mohan Singh and Sohan Singh owned a building as their residence in which the university is housed today .Later, in the mid 60’s the building became the Presidency of Pakistan then after two decades, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the University in the same building on August 6, 1998.
The university is lodged in a construction crafted in Victorian architectural style. Primarily, it was bought as a residential property during pre-partition period. Later, in 60’s the house was designated as the Presidency building .The infrastructure possess all the up-to-date facilities for students. The university contains a spacious library. The library was initially located in the old Presidency till 2006; it was then shifted to its present location to accommodate surplus collection of books. Besides a vast collection of books and other reading materials, the library is equipped with research journals, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc.
FJWU has a Medical Center to provide first aid medical facilities and other health care assistance for minor emergencies. The Center is fully equipped for all emergencies like Ambulance, wheel chair and stretcher are available for emergency use. The Day Care centre at the university is established to facilitate faculty, administration and students at FJWU.
FJWU believes in rising the sporty spirit among female students, to pursue this approach, FJWU, regularly holds sports competitions and prizes are rewarded to the real talents. Following are some of the games played at the university: Table Tennis, Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Squash, Cricket Base Ball, Basket Ball, Athletics, Martial arts, Chess etc.
University also provides accommodation for their students. Currently more than 800 students from all over Pakistan are residing in 12 different hostels of FJWU. The university premises also hold a mosque, cafeteria, bank and effective transport system to facilitate their students.
The University is all involved to achieve excellence in academics, research and novelty at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. The FJWU aims to create a feminine personality which reflects an ultimate combination of high-class ethical standards with a pragmatic approach, highlighting Pakistani society.
As this university is purposely built to render academic excellence among women of Islamic Republic of Pakistan so it is necessary to set some ethical values for the learning students based on Islamic teaching and discipline.
