Abbottabad Campus became functional in July 2001, and the first academic session started in September 2001. From a modest beginning with three departments and 121 student strength, three undergraduate programs and physical structure comprising old World-War II barracks, initiated the leading institute of the region which has now eleven departments, a student strength of 5560 (46 fold increase), 15 undergraduate programs, 11 graduate programs, a qualified faculty strength of 463 including 100 PhDs and 45 modern laboratories.

The institute is granted status of degree awarding institute. Now the institute has became one of the best institute of the country due to its quality education.
