Pakistan's higher education sector has once again failed to secure a position among the world's top 350 universities in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027. The newly released rankings show that the country's highest-ranked institutions have slipped further down the global list, highlighting ongoing challenges in academic competitiveness, research performance, and international recognition.
According to the latest rankings, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, remains Pakistan's highest-ranked university but fell from 354th position last year to 381st this year. Similarly, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) dropped from 371st place to 384th position globally.
The decline means that no Pakistani university currently holds a place among the world's top 350 institutions, a benchmark often associated with leading centers of higher education and research.
Despite the setback, Pakistan maintained a presence in the international rankings, with 18 universities included among 1,504 institutions evaluated worldwide.
The rankings assess universities based on several indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, research impact, international faculty, international students, and sustainability performance.
While some institutions declined, several Pakistani universities recorded notable progress in the latest rankings.
PIEAS emerged as one of the strongest performers, improving significantly from 721st position to 560th place. The improvement reflects gains in academic performance and research indicators.
COMSATS University Islamabad also strengthened its standing, moving from 664th position to 639th globally.
The University of Agriculture Faisalabad achieved a positive jump as well, improving from 654th place to 629th in the international rankings.
Several of Pakistan's well-known universities experienced a drop in rankings this year.
Punjab University slipped from 542nd place to 588th position, indicating challenges in maintaining competitiveness against rapidly advancing institutions worldwide.
LUMS also saw a decline, falling from 555th position to 608th in the global rankings.
The downward trend among some of the country's leading institutions raises concerns regarding research output, international collaboration, innovation, and academic visibility on the global stage.
Among universities located in Sindh, the University of Karachi was the only institution to secure a place in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
Notably, no university from Balochistan was included in this year's rankings, highlighting regional disparities in higher education development and international recognition.
Experts believe that limited research funding, inadequate international partnerships, low citation impact, and insufficient investment in higher education infrastructure continue to affect Pakistan's performance in global rankings.
To improve future standings, universities may need to focus on:
Enhancing research quality and output
Increasing international collaborations
Attracting foreign faculty and students
Strengthening industry-academia linkages
Improving graduate employability outcomes
Expanding innovation and technology initiatives
Although several universities demonstrated encouraging progress, the absence of any Pakistani institution in the global top 350 underscores the need for long-term reforms and strategic investment in higher education.
As international competition continues to intensify, Pakistani universities will need sustained efforts in research excellence, academic quality, and global engagement to improve their position in future QS World University Rankings.
