In a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s higher education sector, the Karachi School of Business and Leadership (KSBL) has become the first Pakistani university in 18 years to win the regional semi-finals stage of the CFA Institute Research Challenge. This global competition, known for its rigorous assessment of financial analysis and professional ethics, has long been dominated by institutions from established financial hubs. KSBL’s victory marks a turning point for academic finance in Pakistan.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition designed to provide university students with intensive training in equity research, company analysis, and professional ethics. Unlike traditional case competitions, this challenge requires student teams to act like real-world financial analysts.
Each year, the competition brings together more than 6,000 students from over 1,150 universities across 100 countries. Participants must prepare original equity research reports and present investment recommendations before panels of seasoned CFA charterholders. The evaluation criteria focus on four core areas: financial valuation, research quality, professional ethics, and presentation skills.
The competition is conducted in multiple progressive stages:
National Level – Universities compete domestically.
Sub-Regional Round – Winners from neighboring countries compete.
Asia-Pacific Regional Semi-Final – Top teams from the sub-region advance.
Regional Final & Global Final – The ultimate championship rounds.
At the national level in Pakistan, KSBL competed against powerhouse institutions including the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) , the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) , and the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi.
In the Southern Asia sub-regional round, the KSBL team finished as co-champion alongside the University of Kelaniya from Sri Lanka. According to competition organizers, this marked the first time in 18 years that a Pakistani university reached this position at this stage.
Other participating institutions in the sub-regional round included:
Management Development Institute Gurgaon (India)
XLRI Xavier School of Management (India)
Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli
FAST National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (Pakistan)
Bangladesh University of Professionals
University of Colombo (Sri Lanka)
At the Asia-Pacific Regional Semi-Final stage, KSBL’s undergraduate Accounting and Finance team competed in a high-stakes breakout round alongside several prestigious international universities:
Nagoya University (Japan)
Griffith University (Australia)
Assumption University (Thailand)
University of Kelaniya (Sri Lanka)
The field at the regional semi-final level also included academic giants such as the National University of Singapore (NUS) , the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) , Peking University (China), VinUniversity (Vietnam), Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
With this result, KSBL recorded its eighth appearance at the national level of the competition and successfully progressed through multiple regional stages this year a consistency record few Pakistani universities have matched.
The historic achievement was made possible by the following KSBL undergraduate team members:
Daniyal Lohana
Anusha Jauhar
Iliyan Suleman
Manal Adil
Sheikh M. Salman
They were guided by a strong mentorship duo:
Talha Ameer Khan – Industry Mentor
Dr. Tariq Basheer – Faculty Mentor
Commenting on the outcome, KSBL Rector Dr. Asghar Zaidi said the result reflected the tireless efforts of participating students and faculty. KSBL Founder and Chairman Hussain Dawood also acknowledged the team’s participation, emphasizing the importance of global exposure for Pakistani students.
“This is not just a win for KSBL; it is a win for Pakistan’s academic resilience. After 18 years, we have proven that our students can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in Asia,” Dr. Zaidi stated.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is widely regarded as a launchpad for future investment professionals. For a Pakistani university to advance this far after nearly two decades signals a revival in the quality of finance education in the country. It also opens doors for Pakistani graduates to compete for top-tier roles in investment banking, asset management, and equity research across global markets.
KSBL’s journey from the national level to the Asia-Pacific Regional Semi-Final defeating and competing alongside elite Asian universities represents a watershed moment. As the first Pakistani university in 18 years to reach this stage, KSBL has not only raised the bar for domestic business education but has also put Pakistan back on the global finance competition map.
With continued mentorship, institutional support, and student dedication, the future looks bright for Pakistan’s representation in international finance competitions.
