An ADP (Associate Degree Programme) runs four semesters over two years. Every student studies compulsory general-education subjects (Functional English, Islamic Studies or Ethics, Ideology and Constitution of Pakistan, ICT, and similar) alongside major subjects from their chosen group. ADP Computer Science majors include Programming Fundamentals, Object Oriented Programming, Database Systems and Digital Logic Design. ADP Commerce and Accounting and Finance majors include Principles of Accounting, Business Finance, Principles of Management and Marketing. ADP Arts lets students specialise in subjects such as English, Urdu, Political Science or Sociology. Exact lists vary by university.
Choosing an ADP group is easier once you can see the actual subjects on the timetable. This page lists them group by group, using real schemes of studies from Pakistani universities and colleges as samples.
Every ADP has the same skeleton: a block of general-education subjects that all students take, and a block of major subjects specific to the group. A few universities describe it as a combination of any two areas from Science, Arts and Commerce, and after two years you can continue into a BS programme. Most institutions ask for intermediate with at least 45% marks. Some only ask for a pass, and A-level candidates need an equivalence certificate from the Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC). Check current criteria on the ADP admissions page.
These appear in almost every ADP scheme, whatever your group:
Credit totals differ by institution. One university's ADP Computer Science and IT schemes total 60 credit hours: 39 in general education, 6 in distribution courses and 15 in major subjects. A commerce scheme from another university totals 66 credit hours across general education, major, elective and internship components. Accounting and finance schemes at some universities reach 70 or more. A rough rule: the major is the smaller part of the degree, and general education fills the rest.
ADP in Computer Science (often searched as "adp cs subjects list") puts programming and computing foundations in the first two semesters, with the rest of the degree adding systems and networks.
This sample follows a University of Wah affiliated college scheme. Figures show credit hours as theory + lab.
| Semester | Subject | Credit hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Programming Fundamentals | 3+1 |
| 1 | Application of ICT | 2+1 |
| 1 | Discrete Structures | 3+0 |
| 1 | Functional English | 3+0 |
| 1 | Islamic Studies | 2+0 |
| 1 | Applied Physics | 2+1 |
| 2 | Object Oriented Programming | 3+1 |
| 2 | Database Systems | 3+1 |
| 2 | Digital Logic Design | 2+1 |
| 2 | Probability and Statistics | 3+0 |
| 2 | Expository Writing | 3+0 |
Later semesters in schemes of this type add Computer Networks and Computer Organization and Assembly, plus an everyday natural science course. At other institutions, the foundation courses are Programming Fundamentals and Digital Logic Design, with Data Structures and Algorithms and Discrete Structures in the third semester. Some newer schemes offer electives such as Python for Data Science and AI.
ADP in Information Technology shares most of its general-education core with ADP CS where a university offers both. At Leads University, for example, both programmes use the same 60-credit structure with five major courses, and Computer Networks appears among the distribution courses.
The major courses typically lean toward databases, networking and applied computing rather than the theory-heavy side of CS. This part varies more than any other group, so match it against your university's notification. If you are torn between the two, look at how many programming and mathematics courses each scheme demands.
ADP Commerce (the "adp commerce subjects" search) mixes business basics with accounting and finance, and newer schemes add digital subjects.
Functional English, Introduction to Psychology, Mathematics, ICT, Islamic Studies or Ethics, Statistics and Probability, Analytical Reasoning, Expository Writing, and Ideology and Constitution of Pakistan.
Principles of Management, Business Finance, Principles of Accounting, Principles of Marketing, Business Information Systems and E-Commerce. Some schemes also list Introduction to Commerce, Business Economics and Financial Accounting, plus a digital skills and data analytics course in the final semester. One commerce scheme (CUST) also requires a three-credit internship.
The ADP Accounting and Finance subjects list is the most uniform of the five groups. A full four-semester sample from one university looks like this:
| Semester | Subjects |
|---|---|
| 1 | Functional English, Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Business, Introduction to History, Introduction to Computer Application, Ideology and Constitution |
| 2 | Expository Writing, Financial Accounting I, Islamic Studies, Environmental Sciences, Principles of Management, Entrepreneurship, Civics and Community Engagement |
| 3 | Principles of Micro Economics, Quantitative Reasoning I, Business Communication, Fundamentals of Business Finance, Principles of Marketing, Financial Accounting II |
| 4 | Quantitative Reasoning II, Banking Laws and Practices, Cost Accounting, Business Law |
Other institutions swap in Business Taxation, Principles of Auditing, Advanced Accounting I and II, Business and Corporate Law, and a three-credit internship or project. If you plan to take ACCA, CA or a BS in accounting afterwards, schemes that include cost accounting, taxation and auditing give you a head start.
ADP Arts splits into two patterns, depending on whether your institution still follows the older annual model or the semester system.
Under the older Associate Degree in Arts, every candidate offers Islamic Studies or Ethics, Pakistan Studies and English (language) as compulsory subjects, then chooses two electives from options such as English Literature, Library Science, Political Science, Sociology and Urdu.
Semester schemes work differently. At Islamia University Bahawalpur, students take general-education subjects from natural science, social science and arts and humanities groups, choosing two subjects from each. They then add specialisation courses. Specialisations offered through affiliated colleges include Arabic, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, Environmental Science, Geography, Library and Information Science, Political Science, Sociology and Urdu.
Sample subject names help you picture it. Political Science students study courses such as Study of Politics, Introduction to Legislative Process and Political Parties and Elections in Pakistan. Sociology students study Sociological Theories, Sociology of Development and Sociology of Law and Human Rights.
ADP follows a national HEC framework, but each university writes its own scheme of studies and each college must follow its affiliating university's. Two colleges offering "ADP Computer Science" under different universities can teach different courses. Course codes, credit hours and semester placement also shift from batch to batch. Always check the notification for your session before enrolling or buying books.
Pick on three things: your intermediate background, your target BS programme and your interest in maths. Computer Science suits ICS and FSc pre-engineering students who enjoy programming. Commerce and Accounting and Finance suit I.Com students and anyone aiming for a business or finance career. Arts keeps the widest options open and fits students headed toward teaching, law-adjacent fields or competitive exams. For fees and seat details, see the BA and ADP fee structure and admission pages.
A completed ADP lets you continue into a BS programme, often joining from the fifth semester at the same institution. Some universities offer dedicated post-ADP BS pathways. One requires a minimum 2.00 CGPA in a relevant ADP, and may add deficiency courses. For the bigger picture of the degree itself, read ADP degree in Pakistan.
ADP subjects fall into general education (English, Islamic Studies or Ethics, Pakistan Studies, ICT, quantitative reasoning) and major subjects of your chosen group such as computer science, commerce, accounting and finance or arts.
Typical subjects include Programming Fundamentals, Object Oriented Programming, Database Systems, Digital Logic Design, Discrete Structures, Probability and Statistics, and later Computer Networks and Computer Organization and Assembly.
One sample scheme lists Programming Fundamentals, Application of ICT, Discrete Structures, Functional English, Islamic Studies and Applied Physics, totalling 18 credit hours.
Common subjects are Principles of Management, Business Finance, Principles of Accounting, Principles of Marketing, Business Information Systems, E-Commerce, Mathematics, Statistics and Probability, and general-education courses.
They include Financial Accounting I and II, Business Finance, Principles of Marketing, Micro Economics, Banking Laws and Practices, Cost Accounting and Business Law. Some universities add taxation and auditing.
ADP IT shares most general-education subjects with ADP CS, and its major courses lean toward databases, networking and applied computing. The exact list depends on your university.
Compulsory subjects are Islamic Studies or Ethics, Pakistan Studies and English. Students then choose electives or specialisations such as English, Urdu, Political Science, Sociology, Library Science or Economics.
No. ADP follows an HEC framework, but each university writes its own scheme of studies, so subjects, credit hours and semester order differ.
Yes. After completing ADP you can continue to a BS programme, often joining from the fifth semester, subject to the university's eligibility and CGPA requirements.
