Lahore: International Women’s Day is being observed across the globe, including Pakistan today. This day has been observed since the early 1900s and is now recognized every year on March 8th.

In our country working women in formal as well as informal regions celebrate International Women’s Day annually to honor their ongoing struggle for due rights, in spite of facing a lot of restrictions in this regard.

International Women’s Day is basically an international event that celebrates women’s accomplishments from the political to the social, while calling for gender equality.


International Women’s Day was initially known as International Working Women’s Day.


The very first International Women’s Day was observed on February 28th, 1909 in US following an announcement by the Socialist Party of America.

At first, International Women’s Day was observed internationally as a famous event after 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member federations to announce March 8th as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

PM’s message on International Women’s Day

In his message, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said the Constitution of Pakistan supports the equal position of women.

Article 18 of the Constitution offers the equal space to women in every legal profession, whereas Article 25 lays down the principles of non-discrimination and favorable action in their case.

He also added that Pakistan is making unstinting efforts to honor as well as to implement its international commitments.

The Government of Pakistan has approved seven Core Human Rights Conventions, also including the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

It is major and main responsibility to provide for the participation of women at every level to make them valuable and fruitful members of society, he said.

“Our government is working on important human rights priority areas regarding women, which involves the formulation of national policy guidelines on Gender Based Violence, revising all discriminatory legislation against women, establishment of new crisis centers as well as strengthening of existing services at district, provincial and federal levels,” said PM.

He moreover highlighted that the Government has taken numerous important steps including policy changes, legal reforms, access to justice, protection of women, children, minorities as well as vulnerable populations.

In his message on the event, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres promised to do everything to overwhelmed entrenched prejudice, support engagement and activism, and to promote gender equality and women’s liberation.
