  • The University of Sheffield is providing two fully supported PhD studentships in Spoken Language Technologies (SLT).
  • SLTs use a variety of AI methodologies to analyze, produce, and respond to spoken and written language, drawing from disciplines such as acoustics, signal processing, machine learning, psychology, computational linguistics, and more.
  • The studentships aim to investigate multidisciplinary research themes in speech and language technologies.

Available Projects

  • Accessible Democracy: This initiative seeks to create technologies that improve public access to parliamentary proceedings, thereby supporting citizens and journalists in holding politicians accountable.
  • Conversation Analytics: The goal of this research is to develop methods for interpreting and understanding the intricacies of spoken conversations while taking into account both linguistic and paralinguistic information.
  • Evolving Communication in Embodied Agents: The goal of this project is to describe the development of language in artificial agents that have sensory apparatus implanted in their physical environment, providing insights into the origins of human language and autonomous agent development.

What’s covered?

The studentships provide full financing for 3.5 years, covering:

  • Home or international tuition fees
  • An improved stipend of £22,280 tax-free (2025/26)
  • An annual research and training support award of £2,500 for research expenditures and conference attendance.
