In a groundbreaking development for Pakistan’s higher education landscape, Arizona State University (ASU)—one of the top-ranked U.S. universities—has officially announced the establishment of its first physical presence in Pakistan. The upcoming National Institute of Technology (NIT) will be launched in Lahore and is set to welcome its first batch of students in Fall 2025.

This move marks a significant milestone as ASU becomes the first American university to build a full-fledged academic institution in Pakistan. NIT will host two main academic divisions:

  • School of Management Sciences
  • School of Data Sciences and Information Technology

Designed to offer a world-class, American-standard curriculum, the institute will blend international academic rigor with Pakistan’s cultural and educational values, catering to the evolving needs of today’s youth.

Visionary Leadership Behind the Project

The initiative is spearheaded by Shahzeb Awan, a University of London-trained lawyer, and Jahanzeb Burana, a Harvard-educated finance expert. Their collective vision to reshape Pakistan’s academic future led to a formal agreement with ASU, signed in April 2025 at ASU’s Tempe campus in the U.S.

Speaking on the partnership, ASU officials emphasized their goal of delivering student-centric education that prepares graduates to thrive in an increasingly competitive global job market.

Dual Degrees & Global Pathways

One of the most exciting aspects of this collaboration is the dual degree program, giving students the opportunity to earn qualifications from both NIT and Arizona State University. Learners will benefit from flexible study options—either in Pakistan or at any of ASU’s global campuses, including those in Washington D.C., California, and over 30 partner institutions under the ASU-Cintana Alliance.

The institute will also offer exchange programs, global internships, and study-abroad opportunities—exposing students to a truly international education ecosystem.

Government Applauds the Initiative

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who met ASU delegates on July 24, 2025, lauded the initiative as a game-changer for Pakistan’s education sector.

“NIT will be a world-class institution that empowers our youth to thrive in global markets,” said the Prime Minister, reiterating his government’s dedication to providing modern, employment-focused education.

What This Means for Pakistan

With the launch of NIT, Pakistan is set to benefit in multiple ways:

Enhanced access to quality, globally-aligned higher education

Greater employment prospects for graduates

Boost in academic exchange and international collaborations

Attraction of foreign academic investments and partnerships

The establishment of the National Institute of Technology is expected to significantly raise Pakistan’s profile in the global academic community while contributing to knowledge-based economic growth.
