CM Reviews Class 9 Performance, Orders Immediate Action
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz voiced serious concerns over underwhelming Class 9 examination outcomes during a video-link session held in Lahore on Thursday. Briefed on the state of school education across the province, she instructed that disciplinary action be taken against teachers at institutions recording Class 9 pass rates under 20 percent.
Officials in attendance also agreed in principle to a new framework tying student exam performance directly to teacher evaluations — a move aimed at improving accountability in government schools.
Ordinance and Regular Testing on the Way
The CM gave preliminary approval to a plan introducing monthly and annual examinations for every grade level. Education officials have been tasked with drafting a detailed rollout timeline and reform strategy, due for presentation the following week. A new ordinance is also in the works, though further specifics were not disclosed during the briefing.
Rewards for Top Performers, Support for Struggling Students
Alongside penalties for underperformance, the meeting outlined an incentive structure: schools posting the strongest results — including district-level toppers — will receive formal recognition and rewards.
For students falling behind academically, the province plans to roll out evening coaching sessions in government schools. Officials also agreed to stop the practice of pushing weak-performing students out of the system, a policy shift meant to keep struggling students enrolled rather than sidelined.
Staffing and Monitoring Reforms
Maryam Nawaz ordered that all vacant head teacher positions be filled within a 45-day window and called for subject-specialist teachers to be posted in government schools. She also directed the provincial education minister to tighten oversight and inspection procedures at every administrative tier.
A district-wise monthly school rating system was requested by the CM, who specifically praised the performance of Government Girls High School Bhoun in Jhang district as a model example.
Tech and Outreach Initiatives
Two new initiatives were unveiled during the session:
- Unified Monitoring App — a digital platform intended to centralize school oversight and performance tracking.
- Library on Wheels — a mobile library pilot launching in Lahore, using a three-wheeler vehicle stocked with over 20,000 digital books plus access to video-based learning content.
The CM additionally requested a detailed performance review of outsourced schools operating in the province.
CM Stresses Substance Over Statistics
Closing the session, Maryam Nawaz cautioned against treating improved scores as an end in themselves, stating that superficial point-scoring in government schools would not fix underlying problems. She emphasized that genuine progress depends on teachers' consistent effort translating into real gains in student results.
