The Punjab government has proposed a major investment in the education sector by allocating Rs. 750.1 billion in the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. The announcement was made on Tuesday as Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman presented the budget in the Punjab Assembly.

The budget session was attended by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, cabinet members, and provincial lawmakers. The proposed education allocation reflects the government's commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure, expanding access to technology, and supporting students through scholarship initiatives.

Major Education Initiatives in Punjab Budget 2026-27

According to the budget documents, a significant portion of the education budget has been earmarked for student welfare and institutional development.

The government has allocated Rs. 22 billion for the Honhaar Scholarship Program, aimed at providing financial assistance to deserving students across Punjab. Additionally, Rs. 15.69 billion has been reserved for the Laptop Program, which seeks to promote digital learning and improve students' access to technology.

To enhance science and technology education, the government has proposed Rs. 33 billion for the establishment and expansion of STEAM Labs in educational institutions. These labs are expected to improve practical learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Focus on Technology and Higher Education

The budget also includes Rs. 6.9 billion for the development of IT labs in colleges, reflecting the government's focus on digital transformation in higher education.

Furthermore, Rs. 7.8 billion has been allocated for the establishment of new colleges, campuses, and sub-campuses across the province. These projects are expected to increase educational opportunities in underserved areas and accommodate the growing number of students seeking higher education.

Punjab Education Foundation Receives Major Funding

The Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) has been allocated Rs. 55 billion in the new budget. The funding is expected to support various educational programs, public-private partnerships, and initiatives designed to improve access to quality education for students from low-income families.

Education Among Key Priorities in Punjab Budget

The education allocation forms part of Punjab's overall proposed budget of Rs. 5.903 trillion for fiscal year 2026-27. According to the budget speech, the provincial budget is approximately 10.7 percent higher than the budget of the current fiscal year.

Education remains one of the largest sectors in the provincial budget, highlighting the government's intention to invest in human capital development, modern learning facilities, and student-focused programs.

The Punjab Budget 2026-27 demonstrates a strong emphasis on education through increased funding for scholarships, digital learning initiatives, STEAM education, and infrastructure development. With Rs. 750.1 billion allocated to the sector, the provincial government aims to improve educational outcomes and expand opportunities for students across Punjab.
